Best of luck to your son, David. I've had AU for 17 years and no regrowth. Yes, alopecia is unpredictable. It's very tough to deal with.
my son also lost his hair quickly in dec 2012. all of the sudden this year, he has had a lot of regrowth, without doing anything i think that is the way alopecia is. it has a mind of its own. good luck to you and your son!
I don't mean to be a downer, the reasons for hair loss are a varied as the people who have it, but you asked about experiences w/regrowth, and this is mine. I lost 80% of my hair 3 years ago (scalp; almost all on legs, arms); the hair on the scalp grew back. Lost it again 7-8 months later; scalp hair and arm hair grew back. Last Oct., I noticed it falling out again. It took 3 months, but this time I have lost almost all the hair on my scalp, my eyebrows and eyelashes went this time, which has never happened. I don't know if it will grow back, but I was mentally ready to be bald the first time I lost it, so I'm okay w/it if it doesn't. I've actually grown tired of the mental roller-coaster ride this has put me through over the last 3 years. I wish your son all the best; good luck.
