Just curious, what do some of you do when you're swimming? And when doing other forms of exercise for that matter? I'd like to swim at the Y we have a membership at but guess I haven't got myself comfortable enough to the point where I leave the house without my wig on and then don't know where I'd put it in the locker room? Bring my stand and just set it in the locker? I'm a little more comfortable if its just family or good friends so just take it off, put my swim cap on and leave it in the house/cabin somewhere if we're at a lake or thier pool but was just wondering what you guys do when working out at a gym like the Y. Just wear swim caps, or hats/bandanas if you're working out? Or a special wig? Figure I need to just work through my insecurity here but just thought I'd see what anyone else's thoughts were!

I wear a vacuum wig and I work out in it. I'm not much of a swimmer, but I have swam with it on also. It stays in place pretty well.
Hi Lee, I just wanted to know what is a vaccum wig?
Hi Amanda

My daughter wears her hair. It's a vacuum piece so not a problem. There are lots of ladies here that prefer to wear hip hats, bandanas, etc. It's really up to you. I'm sure more people will come along soon with more suggestions.

Just take your time this is a difficult condition to deal with and when you feel comfortable with your choice (whatever that may be) you will do what is right for you.

I agree with Susan that there are others with much bigger problems than being bald. I think all is in our minds that we think people has nothing else to do that just watch us- no people have so many problems their own to think about. I love swimming and for years I refused to go swimming when other where having fun but finally I just decided that I wanna swim. First I tought about the cap too but it feels so uncomfortable for me so I don´t use anthing. First people look and then they forget and when some kids say loud "She is bald " I ask for them with a laught that "I wanna see her to where is she?".
But when I´m exercise then I use bandanas I´m a bandana person.
Thanks for the input you guys! So, what is a vaccuum wig exactly? How do they work and are they expensive?
I have a lace wig and I wear it for exercise with no problems. I think if you have a regular wig that fits well, it's not going to be an issue. It can get a little bit warm, but to me this is less of a hassle than dealing with unsolicited questions and comments. When I am going to the gym, alopecia awareness spokeswoman just isn't something on the top of my list!

No suggestions for swimming, I have never been into swimming.

Amanda - any chance you've figured out the swimming challenge yet? Its my first summer with alopecia universalis, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to go. Anything you've learned would be appreciated! Thanks :)
