To tat or not to tat.....that is my question of the day. I have completely lost my eyebrows and without them and no makeup, I look sick. Or like my husband likes to joke, "a newborn baby." Has anyone had it done and can you tell me more about it. My biggest fear is coming out looking like the Joker. Does it hurt? Is it expensive? How do you maintain it? I would love to be able to go swimming and still have eyebrows on my face. Planning a end of the year staff day at the spa next year which will include a lot of water. Help!

Well I know you maintain tattoos with sunblock and touch ups every once in a while. But I think its something you should really not do. I have regular tattoos that I wish I can get rid of and they are in places no one can see while I'm dressed. Its your face! One mistake and its there FOREVER. If they don't use high quality pigments, black can turn into green after some time. If you haven't already, maybe try waterproof eye makeup. I know there are plenty of brands. I have used Lancome and Revlon Colorstay to make "cateyes" and they work well. I'm not sure how they would do underwater though. If you still want to get tattoos make sure you shop around! Ask to see people they tattooed (not just pictures-just because the picture book is in there place of business does not mean they were the one who did the work). Ask for a tour and ask if you can sit in and watch as they do another clients eyebrows. I would think that you would have a better chance of being happy with your choice. Good luck. Take Care!
It was the best thing that we had done for my daughter. Just go lighter and smaller than your regular eyebrows and you can fill them in and make them darker. Some of her eyebrows have come back and it is a nice fill-in. It cost us $550 at the time.
getting my brows tat'd on was the best thing I've ever done. I'm 25 and havent had full brows since I was about 12 or 13. I always just used a makeup pencil to put them on every day. Some days they looked great, others they were all wrong, and I'd spent so much time in front of the mirror trying to get them right...Once I got out of high school my mom suggested we get them done. I was scared at first, but once I met with the lady who was going to do them I felt better. When you first get them done, they are going to be very dark, until the skin heals, then the color will lighten up a bit. I love, LOVE the fact that I got them done. I can swim, play sports, sleep, and never have to worry about them coming off and looking "sick" or like a "newborn baby".
As far as how bad they hurt... they are tattoos, so there is a bit of pain involved. However I would suggest not getting them done at your basic tat shop. Go to someone who deals with permanent makeup, they will work with you on what shade works best for you, and I think you'll just feel more comfortable in general. There are also different ways of tattooing brows, they can make them looks semi natural, or they can just do a basic thin line (which is what I had done) It was right around $500 when I got them done the first time. I’ve since been back once for a touch up that was closer to $100. I spent A LOT of time in the sun, so mine fade pretty quickly.
If you have any other questions, I’m happy to help. As I said, it’s the best thing I’ve done to help me deal with the alopecia.
Thank you all for your advice. Still on the fence about it, but will check a few different permanent makeup artists. I'll be sure to let you all know if and when I get it done.
I took some pictures of when i had brows ( i was happy with what i once had, was fortunate to not have to pluck or shape them) & my cosmetic tattooist studied the pictures she then drew on my face using a heavy liner just so i could get idea of shape & size, ( assured me not to be alarmed by the boldness this was just so i could see where she was headed ) we spent about an hour rubbing out & drawing in until i was happy with the size & shape, i wanted them to be closer together( bridge above nose, & am so pleased that she gently persuaded me not to!! )
She then tattooed them in using hair line brush strokes, stopping frequently to let me look in a hand mirror, i told her where i wanted a little more until we were finished, she also advised the colour for me using a pigment chart that "compliments your skin tone etc."
Unless your face is absolutely perfectly symmetrical i wouldn't recommend stencils because they do not consider your face shape or imperfections, something a great tattooist does.
research, research, research!
It’s the best thing I’ve done since this alopecia journey started, good Luck!
( photo was taken only few hours after done, have faded slighty & look great)

Wow, your brows look great! They look natural and I love the shape.
I was recently diagnosed with AU and losing my eyebrows and lashes were the hardest for me. I was drawing on my eyebrows with eyebrow powder so it looked more natural but I was never confident about the way I looked. I was always worried that when I started to sweat or by the end of the day, it would wear off. I had a permanent makeup artist tattoo recently tattoo my eybrowes (and eyeliner) using hair strokes and they look fabulous. We did spend a while planning them out and I kept checking them every few minutes to see if I wanted them thicker, fuller, etc. It takes a few sessions but the pain is manageable. They look amazing and I'm so happy. My assistant looked at me today and actually asked if my eyebrows had grown back. The hairstrokes look very natural and I highly recommend it!
Hey Michelle,

What a beautiful face and smile you have! Dont worry about looking like the joker. It's not going to happen. :-) Two things; What about the eyebrows that stick on? They look so good and natural. Also I was reading about about hair strokes(tattoo) I've seen this also and they look good. You must find a skillful person for and brow tattoo. That is your first order of operation. forget seeing picdtures of people they say they tatoo. Try to find someone who brow look FABULOUS. :-). Look for a group right here on AW from your area and try to connect with them. Maybe they know of a skillful person. I think the brows with the glue allow you to swim. Check into it. Below are two websites for the stick on brows. Good luck! Keep us posted.
