all of the above are triggers. I was going through a lot of stress and then I got sick and my Alopecia started around the same time. My patches grew in correlation to my stress. It's just really tricky. You can't control any of the things you mentioned so there isn't much one can do to prevent alopecia.

I am beginning to see it will do what it wants I just want to make sure I am doing everything I possibly can hoping our appointment this week is better than the last.

I don't think its as simple as this. IF stress was the 'cause' of alopecia then everyone would have it. The reality is no one knows the cause. It is an autoimmune disease. Your immune system is attacking your hair follicles.. As this is such an unpredictable disease no one really knows how much of a contributing factor stress is. At the end of the day it really is wasted energy trying to figure out what causes/triggers AA when there ISN'T an answer.

stress is a trigger but i think those of us who suffer from Alopecia are probably just predisposed to it. However, you will notice that a lot of people lose hair thanks to stress, it's usually just not permanent in their cases. Wish I was one of those. =[

Whether stress is a trigger or not the goal is two fold. Learning to cope with the unpredictability of AA ( or in my case AU) and learning coping strategies with stress. Whether hair returns or not you will experience a general well being.

Yes, I really believe that I developed AA/AU because of a surgery, I had a Hysterectomy and Ovaries removed I was too young for Menopause, and though I take HRT Its a blow to your system with hormones not in balance and all. I developed my first spot within the year of my surgery, I also developed a Frozen shoulder, out of the blue, with no injury, I had this very restrictive painful condition for 9 months and right after it got better I began losing my hair, it took 10 years to lose it all, and now I only have one growing smaller spot on the crown of my head and white hairs that never become regular and are sparse all over or smooth spots. My Dr considers me AU because she said my spot and whiteys just don't count...lol. Anyways I feel my shoulder and hair loss are related to my shock to my system. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the comments I seem to find out more on Alopecia world about my daughters AA than when I ask the doctors we have been to so far.We go back to the derm on Thursday so I hope he can explain a few things to me I am just trying to figure as much out about this as I can for me and my daughters sakes so any input is appreciated. Also, as long as she remains healthy I think we will deal with everything elsethe best way we can:)

I developed universalis when I became pregnant with my first child at 28. I'm married and we were trying to conceive, so I don't believe that it was stress-related; possibly hormones or other chemical canges triggered my hair loss.

Again, AA, AT, AU is an autoimmune disease. The cause is unknown. What may or may not trigger a flare is also unclear. I was 49 when I started to lose my hair (I now have AU). I thought it might be hormonal...I was told clearly that changes in hormones is not a cause for AU....

The diagnoses is important here. If the diagnoses is AA/AT/AU...as I said....autoimmune. There are other causes of hair loss.....make sure you have been given an accurate diagnoses.

*26, sorry.

My 5 year old was perfectly healthy with no stress when the first spot showed up. She would go in for injections and it would always come back. It wasn't until she had a virus a year later that she lost all of her hair. She still wasn't under any stress other than she was sick of the dermatologist. That was 5 months ago. She still hasn't grown back any hair on her head, but it appears like she is starting to get a few eyelashes and eyebrows. It wasn't until we stopped all treatments that they started to appear. I personally think it will come back when it is ready. Not much we can do at this point but wait.

Hi everyone my daughter had another app with the derm today at a great childrens hospital he was much nicer and really talked to me, the only thing is all of her hair on top seems to be thinning and I asked if this was diffuse AA he told me he did not think so he thought it was telegan effluvium and the spot he wasnt sure he thought AA but I know for sure it is AA in the spot because I noticed a hair like they mention (exclamation mark hair) but it was longer bottem line he told me either way theres nothing that I can do which I guess I already knew so if I have to get some hair things for her so be it, I know she is already getting so sick of people picking at her head I think I'm doing more damage and driving her nuts so I'm glad I can talk here a bit because I feel more comfortable talking to people who know. Thanks:) Also he told me her iron level was 11 and shes 4 so I will have to look it up to see how low that really is.
