So, I've been wearing a worn out wig for a while. It's a synthetic and I've got a new one that I'm wearing on Monday. I am so nervous about the comments because although it's the same wig color and style it's going to look different because it' s fresh. I'm going to try to cut the bangs and the length the same and get some of the shine off of it but it will look different. Its not the fear of anyone noticing (I know they'll notice) it's the fear of comments. I hate people fishing for me to tell them why I wear a wig by commenting on my new wig. How do you handle those comments?

I havent switched wigs yet but when I started wearing one, I wore it back in sort of a low ponytail so it looked different than how I would wear my hair anyway. Maybe if you use a headband or pull it back, people will think it looks different because of the accessory. However, mostly, I find that people dont notice virtually anything not directly related to themselves!
I hate this too! I have changed my wig from a short blonde one to a long brunette one! In your case I am pretty sure you can get away with saying you just got you hair styled and conditioned. I only tell people when I do not mind explaining it bc it takes forever explaining it. If I don't feel like it, I usually just say I wear a wig look up Alopecia Areata/Universalis.
My advice to you, dear, is to ALWAYS have at least two or three synthetic wigs of the same style and "rotate" them. That way they won't appear to be "worn out." I've been doing that for years. Currently I have four of the same style, that I keep "in rotation."
Cynthia, you are absolutely right. And I've been telling myself that everytime I get one. I bought several and have them in a closet. Really, I need to get them out wash, vinegar and cut them all. I ruined one by cutting the bangs too short. I should buy a few more. This time I really will get them ready to wear and rotate! I just hate the shine that's there for the first few weeks!
I switched in one day from an ash blonde (topper) shoulder level to a full wig light golden brown, layered, halfway down my back and the ONLY thing people noticed was the color change!!! It's true that people don't REALLY look at you. Oddly enough, I was standing in front of 25 people doing an exercise class. Now, these people see my BACK every class and yet they did not notice. So, I wouldn't worry at all. I wasted a whole night of sleep worrying about what to say to people and all I ultimately need to say was, "Thank you".
Don't forget that other people have their own problems, and may be just as worried about what you think if them. I doubt if people will say much. Lately people tell me I change my hair every day! I try to take it as a compliment! Just smile and say "yes I do!" You have no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed.
I don't think it'll be that bad. I usually try to wear it out everywhere else except work for a couple of days or getting a new one while you're gone for a long weekend also helps because people tend not to notice the change as much. So far, it's been working wonders for me, I haven't had a comment about it since elementary school, which we all know, was pretty juvenile stuff compared to life as you get older and have to deal with Alopecia.

Hey I just came across this discussion post and had to write in as I am currently going through this (day 3 of 'new" hair)! Ive had AA for 24 years and have been wearing the same type of wig for 8 years. Buying a new one every 3 months or so. So i definitely know what you are talking about here. It is synthetic so it drys out and looks fired after about 2 mths. You would think that after 8 years I would get use to switching out the old with the new - not one bit. I am always so worried what someone might say! Its clearly noticeable about my new fresh look. For the past 3 days I have had a few comments, most of them are usually about how fresh and good my hair looks now and how it looks this good. I usually try and defer comments and keep to the same story of "oh I know it look good aye! I am so happy with it. I have the best hair dresser." I also usually tell them my hair dresser (made up from another town) does a hot oil treatment that strips the frizy-ness from my hair and put back in the moisture. Then I start talking about something else!

Just be confident :)

Not to criticize, but to advise....never get to the point you are wearing "a worn out wig." When you find a style you like, buy at least 3 of them, and wear them "in rotation." Purchase more if you can afford to do so. That way you can avoid all the "negatives"......I learned that lesson the hard way....so now I have seven wigs in the style I like......proactive is always better than reactive. Reactive puts people (especially the kind that are "fishing" on the defensive, and makes them mean.

You can be polite and say "yeah....thanks...." and change the subject....that might work, that might not work.
