Hey I just came across this discussion post and had to write in as I am currently going through this (day 3 of 'new" hair)! Ive had AA for 24 years and have been wearing the same type of wig for 8 years. Buying a new one every 3 months or so. So i definitely know what you are talking about here. It is synthetic so it drys out and looks fired after about 2 mths. You would think that after 8 years I would get use to switching out the old with the new - not one bit. I am always so worried what someone might say! Its clearly noticeable about my new fresh look. For the past 3 days I have had a few comments, most of them are usually about how fresh and good my hair looks now and how it looks this good. I usually try and defer comments and keep to the same story of "oh I know it look good aye! I am so happy with it. I have the best hair dresser." I also usually tell them my hair dresser (made up from another town) does a hot oil treatment that strips the frizy-ness from my hair and put back in the moisture. Then I start talking about something else!
Just be confident :)
Not to criticize, but to advise....never get to the point you are wearing "a worn out wig." When you find a style you like, buy at least 3 of them, and wear them "in rotation." Purchase more if you can afford to do so. That way you can avoid all the "negatives"......I learned that lesson the hard way....so now I have seven wigs in the style I like......proactive is always better than reactive. Reactive puts people (especially the kind that are "fishing" on the defensive, and makes them mean.
You can be polite and say "yeah....thanks...." and change the subject....that might work, that might not work.
