My father-in-law is in his 70s and has been a barber his whole life. Back in the day, when a fellow would get a spot of AA, that fellow would go to the barber who would dab the spot with white iodine. Every few weeks that fellow would come back in and get another treatment of white iodine dabed on his balding area. According to my father-in-law, the applications of white iodine really worked! Unfortunately, nowadays you can't even purchase white iodine over the counter. Drugies have found ways to use white iodine in making their drugs. So, no more over the counter sales of white iodine! Sea Kelp tablets have a high concentration of iodine, but can cause thyroid problems and the tablets are not recommened for children. I guess the closest we can get for children may the Sea Kelp shampoo? A fellow from another website tried tinted iodine but did not have any results. Has anyone else heard of the healing effects of white iodine?

Hi Charlie! I'm glad to learn your nephew is having good results with the use of Iodides Tincture. The kids used it every night for four weeks. Now I am applying it once every other night, and will continue with this. I've come across a few articles where persons used it every night for four weeks, then every other night. Both kids seem no worse off, that's for sure. They are very relieved that Roggaine is not being applied twice a day (back then I didn't know it was a hassle for them). As I had posted before, my daughter is loosing far less hair than before. It will be very interesting to learn how others are responding with the use of Iodides Tincture. Thanks for your input!!
Also, you can get Iodides Tincture AKA Decolorized Iodine at Walmart. If the item is not in stock, Walmart will order it for you at your request. It is sold in two ounce bottles for $3.99 per bottle. Best Wishes.
I found white iodine at Walmart. Lets hope it works
Hi Edie! If it does work, I believe your only proof would be, if you loose less hair. Good luck to you & best wishes.
Hi there,

i bought white iodine at the Walmart pharmacy...good luck

Edie
Hi there Edie! I'm glad you found the Iodides Tincture at Walmart. It certainly can't hurt to try it. The kids' dermatologist said that she doesn't see any harm it could do. There are so many old timers who really believe in treatment with Iodides Tincture, and they certainly can't all be wrong, after witnessing success with this treatment. I used it on the kids last December for a total of five weeks. My daughter is almost in full remission with just two tiny spots of AA. My son's AA has gotten a bit worse atop his head (but a lot of regrowth in the back), I think we will revisit treatment with Iodides Tincture atop his head. Please keep me up to date and let me know how this works for you. Best wishes!
Lynn,
White iodine slows down the hair loss but does it promote new growth? I am not sure that it will help Em, my daughter, she has only a few hair left. Also, Rogaine comes in foam form. It is much easier to apply and not greasy at all but it is more expensive compare with the generic version.
Take care,
Myem
Hi there Myem! When I tried Iodides Tincture AKA Decolorized Iodine on the kids, I applied it every night and applied the 5% Minoxidil every morning. I'm really not sure if Iodides Tincture promotes growth, but I know it slowed hair loss significantly with my daughter. In any case, if hair loss is slowed down then maybe there is a chance the body is try regrow hair? I read that doctors in India use Iodides Tincture for five weeks when treating children, and if there is no regrow, they move onto other forms of treatment. My daughter is almost in full remission. We dislike the foam Rogaine and I apply liquid generic Minoxidil %5. I'm sorry to learn your daughter has had significant hair loss. Maybe massaging her scalp nightly will help stimulate hair regrowth? Are you using a cream to try and promote regrowth? Have you tried any other treatments? Let me know how it is going. Take care!
hi all,
I am an indian.I have severe hair loss, The volume of my hair is less than half of what it used to be a year back. I want to try iodine tincture method u have mentioned.I want to know if the hair that regrows is white in colour or not.If it is so, i cant foolow it as i have black hair.
Please reply asap.Thanks in advance.
Hi there Reshma! I'm sorry to learn of your hairloss. I've heard that for a lot of people the baby hair (new hair) comes in white, but then gains color quickly. I wouldn't let any white regrow discourage you seeking treatment and trying to get your hair to regrow. My kids' hair grows back as brown, but for many people it does start off as a light white, then gains its pigmentation. I know a lot of people do not think that Roggaine (5% Minoxidil) works, but I beleive that it does work. It takes at least four months for the Roggaine to begin working, and regrowth is a very slow process, but I believe it helps to regrow hair. Best wishes to you and just let me know if you have questions. I will try to answer based on my experience helping my kids seek treatment. Take care.
Hi Reshma,

The white iodine is actually clear - not "white", so it does not color or stain your hair. White iodine is also called decolorized iodine. Regular iodine stains orange or brown. I have read many comments by people whose hair has grown back white, but that does not have to do with iodine. That is just part of the disease for some people. The regrown hair I have is brown. There has been no change in color by using the clear/white/decolorized iodine. Hope you find it works for you!
I've heard of no one with AT or AU trying to use decolorized iodine to try and regrow hair. It is an old "home remedy." I've only heard of persons with AA trying this treatment.
