Amy, I heard once that only 4% of the people with alopecia areata are AU. I heard that in 2000 - I don't know if the percent is still true. I have had AA for 22 years - and I have come close to losing it all - but never have. I have had about 20 years of full hair and four episodes of various degrees of hair loss. I thought this time i would lose all of it and I even decided not to try any more treatments about five months ago - and now it is growing back. I would suggest you take it one day at a time. What seems like you couldn't handle, you might find you can if it ever happens.

Sorry about the hair in the tub again.

I'd just shave it off and lead life as a bald man.

Now I've accepted it I'm much happier.

Ray, I have to agree with you, I find it much more of a chore to have to upkeep by baldness. Having darker skin I find I can blend it much easier and find that I can go a few days without shaving. But if I have somewhere important to go, I will make sure to shave it that day.

I also agree about the cancer issue. Yesterday in a furniture store I saw a woman with a hat and no eyebrows/lashes and I asked her if by chance she had alopecia. It turned out that she was going through cancer treatments which at that point the hair loss seemed secondary to both of us. She talked more about her cancer than the hair loss. I find that I am constantly speaking with people with cancer, now that I think about it, this is the 3rd time this week alone.

A lot of people think of cancer when they see someone with no hair. The good thing for Alopecians is that it is just Alopecia.

Only yesterday day I saw a couple of clients who I had not seen for a long time. They were shocked at first when they saw me as I used to have really think hair and they had not heard about my hair loss. When I explained about the Alopecia they were relieved.

I think if you shave every morning you need to just put it out of you mind. Perhaps have another shave if you’re going somewhere special in the evening or try keeping g a really good electric razor with you for keeping on top of any growth as the day goes on.

I must admit that I love being AU but I do dread my hair coming back as it is such a hassle keeping on top of it if you have AA.

i had AA since high school but it only got worse in the university when i decided to shave off. This was like 4 years ago. Since then, I am shaving each morning! It's like brushing my teeth! And i started to hated it, because it's like I am dependent on it - if it happens that I can't shave i feel like not starting the day at all. Not going to school, or work, or meeting my friends.

I wish i could use smth like instant wax (i don't know the side effects of that but these days it makes me seriously trying it) because it's easier and (most important of all) it lasts longer than shaving it.

If i shave in the morning by 5 or 6 in the afternoon you can see already the shape of the spots and that looks horrible. I feel like I had been affected by a serious disease and that even people start reacting different to that. Or it might be only in my mind but it does makes me treat people differently.
In any case once someone even implied that i might have a serious cancer and that if i don't want talk about it's ok.
