Hi friends!
I've been AU 32 of 39 years. Very dry, scaly skin as a child, pitted nails, hives and eyes get extremely red easily (Vision is perfect!). Hypothyroidism was diagnosed early. I take thyroid medicine. The dry skin and hives have disappeared. Like many of you,I consider myself an unusually healthy person. Rarely sick. Feel like my immune system is super strong even though it's obviously a little confused on the hair follicles. ANyone else feel this way?

I have never really had a problem with my nails, but have wondered why we don't loose those too. arent' they the same cells as hair? Just something I was always curious about lol

Hi Spot, About two years ago my nails started getting very brittle. I have had AU since I was 5. My mom said my nails were very brittle when I was little but I don't really remember them being this bad until recently. I thought it might be my diet but from what I've heard it is the AU. Someone recommended Biotin as a vitamin suppliment but embarassingly enough I have a hard time swallowing pills so I haven't tried it yet. I know a 5 year old can swallow pills but it is just one of my things. :-)

After I retired from the Marine Corps things may have been stressfull, had to learn to be a civilian!
My nails started to get very brittle. For about 8 months they were like that. I had to tape them when practicing Judo. If I didn't they would rip off. Has anyone else had brittle nails?

I'm with all of you and the "no other health issues" besides the AU of course, I have always had sinus issues and a bad caffeine addiction LOL. I too am th only member of my family with AA, but was tested as a child for thyroid issues and blood disorders. My maternal grandmother died of Leukemia, so this was a concern, but I am healthy today and thankful to God for healthy children. Blessings to you!! Lori
