AAAF Funds Alopecia Areata research at Epworth Dermatology / University of Melbourne.
It is my great pleasure to advise that AAAF has been successful in securing the services of Jane Li a PhD student at the University of Melbourne, studying the subtypes of immune cells
(known as T cells) in Alopecia Areata. T cells are a type of white blood cell involved in various immune responses in the body. Much evidence exists to show AA is a T cell mediated disorder. Memory T cells are a subset of T cells that persist in the body and provide an immunological 'memory'. A new type of memory T cell known as resident memory T cells (TRM cells) has recently been described which reside in the skin and play an important part in skin immune function.

The overall objective of the research project is to determine the effects of corticosteroids on immune cells, known as T-cells, in the skin of alopecia areata patients. Corticosteroids are the most common treatment for alopecia areata, but often cause debilitating side effects and has a 20% failure rate and significant side effects. Understanding why the significant failure rate and relapse pattern are the main drivers for this research.
The project will comprise three Aims, as described below.

Aim 1. Characterise the subtype of T-cells present in human alopecia areata.
Aim 2. Evaluate the activation state of T-cells in alopecia areata skin
Aim 3. Determine the direct effects of corticosteroids on T-cells. . We will compare different corticosteroid doses, to determine which responses are most sensitive to this treatment.

The first outcome of this project will be the demonstration that corticosteroid treatment does in fact alter the natural history of AA.
A second outcome will be the identification of markers for the remission of Alopecia Areata and for susceptibility to relapse.

Jane's supervisors include Professor Rodney Sinclair, dermatology clinician-researcher and Director of Epworth Dermatology, the largest hair loss clinic in Australia, and Professor Frank Carbone, one of Australia's leading immunologists.

This could not have occurred without your support. We all in our own way are promoting awareness into Alopecia Areata, and it is through this continued support that we have been able to raise the funds needed for this research.

QLD - Saturday 31st August 12:00pm - Lunch get together. This year AAAF will be organising an Open Day in November. We are very interested to know what information you would like presented. So in preparation and organising of this event, Liz Bear the S.A. Branch Manager will be going to QLD and invites you to come and lunch with her. This is a informal meeting and a chance to interact with others, find out what is happening at AAAF, the updates on the medical research, AAAF programs, meet our volunteer organising the event and as always ask those questions.

We will be meeting 12pm. If you’re interested in attending can you let Liz@aaaf.org.au know so we have an indication on numbers.

Just a reminder, AAAF is running two studies in 2013. Both are for those over 18. Please help us to help you and those that come behind you in understanding the emotional journey in all forms of Alopecia Areata by participating.

1) You are invited to participate in a research project to evaluate the quality of life, psychological impact, and resultant acceptance of Alopecia Areata (AA) diagnosis. The study is entitled “Alopecia Areata: The impact over time.”

2)Women Only - You are invited to participate in a research project to investigate the impact alopecia areata has on women’s self-esteem, depression anxiety and coping strategies. The study is entitled “Investigation the impact of Alopecia Areata on women's self-esteem, mood states and coping”. http://www.aaaf.org.au/uploads/ITP%20_Impact%20of%20AA%20in%20Women...
