Jacques, I have to respond. In the grand scheme of things, losing 95% of my hair in 2009 was the least of my worries. I was very literally fighting for my life. Now, my health is stable, but I know it's a fragile stability. It can take a turn for the worse with no warning and for no reason. I might lose my hair again.

As long as there is sin in the world, there will be death, disease, destruction, depression, despair and the like. Sometimes, God removes certain things from our lives as a direct result of our sin, as a means of disciplining us. Sometimes things happen just because they happen.

Do you know what God told Job when he complained about his circumstances? "Where were you when I created the world. Who are you to question my ways?"

Instead of asking "why me?" when something bad happens to you, you should ask "why not me?" I will tell you this: there is NOTHING so special about you that you deserve to be spared of all pain, suffering or inconvenience. That is true for all of mankind, myself included. ALL of the disciples suffered greatly. Only John lived to old age, but that was after being boiled alive in oil. Early Christians were stoned, crucified, thrown to lions, beheaded...it was gruesome. Becoming a Christian does not free us from all earthly ills, nor does it guarantee us worldly success.

I'm sure someone will think I'm being harsh, but the fact of the matter is that God isn't actually concerned with our HAPPINESS, He's concerned with our HOLINESS. "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you." "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." When you stop focusing on yourself and start focusing on God, He will change your heart and your attitude.

It seems to me that your "faith" in God is dependent on what you think He should do for you. Have you not internalized that He sent His son to the cross so you don't have to pay for your own sins? This is what He has done for you. Anything else is additional blessings. Keep in mind, His blessings are directly tied to your obedience. Over and over, we see in the scriptures that they are intimately interwoven.

Fix your eyes on Jesus...seek to serve Him in what you do. Seek to do right. This is not a promise that your hair will grow back, but if you do this genuinely and earnestly, it is a promise that you will change and your attitude will change. Your relationship with Christ will deepen and you will look at your difficulties as opportunities not roadblocks.

Nine years ago, I was nearly killed by a drunk driver. He hit me head on in my lane. I can honestly say I never said "Why me?" but instead said "why not me?" And since I was spared (through the hand of God) I have had numerous opportunities to praise Him by extolling what He has done in my life. People have been inspired and blessed to hear my testimony, about how I had to learn how to walk again and all the things that go along with being in a major wreck.

What does your current attitude do for your testimony? Does it add or detract from it?

2:00pm-4:00pm
PICNIC IN THE PARK
Chino California Alopecia Areata
Support Group Meeting

Victoria Arbors Park
7429 Arbor Lane
Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91739

The support group is an ideal place to come and talk with others about living with alopecia areata. It is the place to gain knowledge from those who have had years of experience. With time comes the ability to deal and cope with your own hair loss or that of a loved one. We are very fortunate that so many are willing to bring to the meetings their wisdom and advice to share in a direct but compassionate manner
that reflects understanding and concern. The support group experience has its rewards for all who attend.

Alopecia presents itself with a unique set of challenges although they are not as devastating as many other diseases for which I'm VERY thankful. We do need to remember each other in prayer, hopefully daily, to have victory in whatever situation we're in and to grow as believers in Jesus Christ.
