Need Opinions Please - Awaiting Biopsy Results

Hi All,

I am anxiously awaiting my biopsy results, though I'm fairly certain it will come back positive for FFA. That said, I would love any insight from the ladies here. For starters, I am 25 years old (yes, I know that's young for FFA) and noticed my hair thinning right in the front center of my hairline, basically in my bangs, about a year ago. When it started, I was experiencing lots of scale - I mean huge dandruff flakes. I went to 3 different derms of the course of a few months and the first said Seb Derm, the second said Sebopsoriasis and the third said psoriasis. They all gave me the save Rx - T Gel, Ketoconozal, clobseatol solution - the huge flaking finally subsided, however I continue to lose hair. I am only losing my hair in my widows peak area, in sort of a MPB pattern. I am experiencing itching all over my scalp, specifically along my entire hairline, as well as irritation of my top forehead when I touch it a lot. I finally went to a 4th derm who took a quick look at my scalp and said she noticed some "erythema" and scarring. She told me not to worry and she wanted to do a biopsy to rule out scarring alopecia. Immediately I broke down crying and she assured me that if it did come back as FFA, this was the earliest case she had ever seen and we would be able to start treatment to stop it.

I am posting some photos here and am hoping someone can provide some insight into what they think/if they experienced the same symptoms. P.S. sorry for my ugly biopsy wound in the photo!

Most FFA patients have lost eyebrows or other body hair such as legs or arms.  There are many causes for hair loss, so try to be calm until you receive results.  Best of luck to you.

Hi there, the process you describe about the itching and flakes sounds familiar to me, however, I did not have huge flakes but I could see a silver-ish scale right where the hair comes out of the scalp.  That started first for me and derm said seb dermatitus.  I think it was 2 years later I noticed the hair above my ear disappearing, I thought my glasses were too tight, derm said ponytail too tight.  Then hair loss started all along hairline and I got biopsy and confirmed FFA.  I have been using tacrolimus 0.3% compounded into cetaphil cleanser that I leave on at night.  I also started CBD oil and salve that I rub into hairline every other day because if I use the tacrolimus every day it really itches.  I had similiar burning itchy feelings along hairline, got steroid injections and they really burned.  But now it feels ok and maybe some hair is regrowing but I think it is too early to tell.

Do not despair!  There are lots of us on this forum with ideas, experiences and support to give you.  Wait for your results and go from there, find a dr  you feel comfortable with.  There are some research articles out there too.

I do not have any loss of eyebrow or eyelashes as yet, I noticed a reduction in arm hair and wonder if that is age, I am 52.   I've also started the anti inflammatory diet to see if that will help everything.

You still have your eyebrows which is a big positive in the scheme of things. My eyebrows went first then all the other symptoms hit a year or two later as I entered peri menopause. Did you get any other labs done? I had Vitamin D, Iron and B12 deficiencies (plus wacky hormones) all of which have itchiness and hair loss as a symptom. If not, you should get those all checked to see if a vitamin or hormone Is a factor in the mix of exploring what’s happening to your hair. :)
