I meant to post this, not send it via email. Sorry everyone!!!!
After finding out our son has totalis, and it's unlikely to be temporary, we got him a hairless cat (sphynx). It has really helped him. When we looked, though, most of the sphynx breeders charge $800-$1200 for their cats, which would have been a show stopper for us. We wondered if there is anyone else out there who would like to be able to get a 'bald' cat, but can't because of finances.
The "slightly used" cat we got is not by any means a show quality cat. She is not a cat that any sane breeder would breed with, because she has patches of fur instead of being completely bald as the breed standard stipulates. However, she isn't spayed. I would consider trying to find a male to breed her with if I know for sure that there are other families out there who would give the kittens a loving home, and that this would fill a need that a shelter cat would not (if you just want any cat, PLEASE adopt one of the shelter cats near you that needs a home!)
I've really been going back and forth on this, so please, don't flame me. If no one posts, I'll take that as "nope, we haven't been sitting around pining for a bald cat" and be done with it. I already know statistics on shelter cats, and cat overpopulation, responsible breeding, etc. If this were any other breed of cat, she'd be neutered already, just like my siamese and our ex-barn cat. I'm not an irresponsible pet owner, I'm a mom whose son had retreated from all his friends when he found out he was probably going to be bald for the rest of his life, but now brings his cat out and announces to the neighbor kids "this is my cat, she has alopecia like me!"
