I have an eight year old daughter who is living with AA. She was diagnosed with AA in June, but I think it is turning into AU. She has little hair left and will soon be bald. She is doing okay emotionally, but is eager to get a wig! What ones are the most comforable? What ones will withstand the days of an active eight year old? HELP....

We went to the kids club. They have a program for free hair pieces for kids. It takes a while, but we were happy with it.
Sorry to hear about your daughter is losing her hair. So is mine. My daughter was diagnosed with AA in August and has a fringe of hair left. She is also losing her eyelashes. Good news is that new growth is coming!

We got a wig from Paula Young. They have petite sizes too. It's itchy, so she doesn't wear it often, even with the little cap underneath it. But it is an option if she chooses to have hair sometimes. Most of the time my daughter just wears caps or scarves because it's just easier!
We will probably try to fill out an application for a wig through kids club or locks of love too, but I'm not sure if we will qualify. My husband's insurance will cover a wig, but I don't know how much yet.

Pamela...are you treating your daughter's alopecia with any prescription creams or anything? We got a prescription for a cream, but insurance will not pay for it. I researched this cream on the internet and found a trial study on it used with people who have alopecia. The results was not good...they said that the cream will not penetrate deep enough to have any effect. I don't know. Alopecia is very unpedictable (I've heard) and some things work for some people and not for others. I was just wondering.

My daughter is losing her eyebrows too, and her lashes are thinning. I've also noticed that she doesn't have much arm hair/leg hair. That is what makes me think that it's turning into AU. My daughter is in good spirits, but she was concerned with my husband today...He started to tear up as he was combing what is left of her hair. She has never seen him cry before...She said "Daddy, it's only my hair!" We ofcourse worry about her in school...kids can be so mean (we already have a "mean" girl who tries to take off her hat all the time). It's hard being a parent and not being able to "fix" it. I think my husband finally had a little breakdown! We have been through so much. Two and 1/2 years ago my other daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I believe that both my girls ended up with the same virus and their bodies reacted in different ways. My youngest (4 years old) daughter's body started to attack it's pancreas and my oldest (8 years old) daughter's body decided to attack it's hair follicles. Two auto-immune diseases in this family and all the stress and frustration has finally caught up with me and my husband.
Hi Rhonda My name is Mary and I have a 10 year old with AU. I have purchased plenty of wigs for my daughter and I took here with me to the wig store and let her try on different ones to see which one felt good for her which was really hard because most wigs are not designed for kids. My daughter is very active in sports and loves to play sofftball and basketball. Softball was hard because she needed a wig that would stay on when she pulled the helmet off. Human hair is good and looks most natural and thay come with drawstrings which can be pulled tight enough to stay on and they have ones which can be adjusted to fit her head. Some people use tape or glue that can be bought from the hair supply store to hold the wig in place. I bought my daughter a variety of wigs and I just adjusted them with the drawstring or the straps and they stayed on during all her activities. You should try locks of love. They are an organization that provides kids with a prostetic wig that is vacuum fitted to their head and it only comes off if your daughter releases the suction. My daughter has one now it took us 6 months to get it but it is wonderful. You have to fill out an applicatication and based on your income it is possible to get the wig for free. My daughter was able to pick the length and the color of the hair. You should check out their web site I think she would benefit greatly. I know because my daughter loves hers. I hope this was helpful and if you have any more questions or just want to talk just write back. Have a blessed day Mary
