Terri - here's a discussion I posted in 2009 about Alopecians as the next step in human evolution:

Hi Nancy ... lately I too been thinking its an evolution jump. But I blame my thinking on being an X-Men fan. LOL
I have been lately going out more and more often au naturel. When I go see my horse regardless who might be there. And while driving and around home.
Three cheers to all.

I have to admit I am so impressed with all of you who have the guts to go out bald in public. Maybe 30 years from now or when I am senile I will do it.... LOL. For the time being I am just glad I have shaved my head. It has been almost a year now since I first took the razor to my head. I never thought I would hear myself say " I like the feel of my head when it is just freshly shaved".... LOL.

Hi all - I just put a couple of videos up showing me dancing last week at a big outdoor concert pavilion. Around 1,500 people learned that a bald woman can boogie (and I didn't get a single cancer question!) (There are also a couple of music videos from my camp I just went to.)

Question: when i click on the Facebook "like" button, does it take a while before it shows up on Facebook, or what?

Thanks for this group!! It's perfect and just what i need. I have female pattern baldness and recently cut my hair down to about 1/2 inch. (couldn't quite go the whole distance yet...but aspire to!) I'm easing into the "coming out." I don't wear a hat or anything when i'm driving. And various acquaintances have seen me "as is." I was thinking about all of us the other day, as i do quite frequently. And i was thinking that for one thing, we are all pioneers. For women's baldness to become acceptable, it has to be seen much more. So, bless all of us for trying. Also, i was wondering if maybe we (and bald/balding men as well) are not part of evolution? I mean cave people had hair all over; and bit by bit over time, almost all of that was lost. Perhaps humans are on their way to total baldness and we are just a step along the way. Well, as you can see, i do a lot of thinking! Thanks for having me in the group. I hope to be bald soon!! (did i ever think i'd be saying THAT??)

Maureen,
What an inspirational story. GOOD FOR YOU! I wish your sense of empowerment for everyone on this site and you are just one more shining example of how embracing can be beautiful. Congrats and welcome to the sisterhood.

Been shaving my head for about 12 or 13 years. I have just started going out in public bald in the past two weeks! Let me tell you it is the most freeing feeling in the world! I have had alopecia for 35 years (I'm 44) and spent all of those years being ashamed, covering up, denying myself the pleasure of doing activities I love... all because I was horrified at the thought of someone seeing my baldness.

How did I finally get to this juncture? My Freedom Hair vacuum wig has been back in New Zealand for a "tune-up" and I have been wearing a much lower quality synthetic hair wig lately. It is itchy, hot and just plain horrible. It has been beastly hot here in the midwest too! My boyfriend and I just got new bikes and wanted to go riding. There was no way in hell I was going to wear that wig on a two-hour bike excursion in the blazing heat! I decided I was going to go for it and "out" myself. I took a baseball cap along (just in case I chickened out) but never even put it on! It was wonderful. Since that day we have taken several bike trips, played frisbee in the park, and even went swimming at the local public pool- all bald!!! Have people stared? Probably, but I don't care or even notice. If they feel uncomfortable seeing a bald woman that is their problem, not mine anymore. I have redeemed my sense of self-worth and beauty.

It took a long time to get to this point, and I have to thank this wonderful website for much of the confidence I have gained. We are beautiful women!! Look at the photos of us on this site! In fact, just today I had a consultation with a great tattoo artist here in Indianapolis. I have decided to get a tattoo of a Lotus flower on my head! The lotus flower symbolizes overcoming a hardship and becoming, or embracing, the beauty that lies within. That is perfect for me! Plus, if people want to stare at my bald head I figure I can really give them something to look at this way!!! ;)
