I went shopping bald today!!! YAY

I found the adults averted their eyes and the kids stared. LOL They better get used to it because it was very liberating and very cool compared to a scarf or wig! Have to say tho, it did get a little chilly in the grocery store.

I was like Alexandra, tired of the handfuls of hair coming out in the shower and hair slithering down my body. Once the spots couldnt be hidden anymore, I handed hubby the clippers and off it came.

What helped me most I think was that at the same time my step daughter was losing her hair from Chemo. How could I complain about being bald knowing for me the end was just being bald, and for her it was going to be the end of her life. This may sound crazy, but I was happy to have something to share with her. Its been a year and a half now, we lost Shannon in Febuary of this year. I still put on a scarf or a wig to go shopping etc, but when Im around friends I go bald.

Losing the facial hair was a bit more difficult, but once I found eyebrows and eyelashes that work, its all good.

I just consider myself low maintenance now. Freedom from razors, hair products and salon appointments!!!

Beth,
I know how you feel! I'm going through the same feeling right now! I set a deadline for myself to shave my head by the time I go back to school (at the end of summer). And that's what I plan to do. What made me decide to do this is that I can't stand losing handfulls of hair in the shower, watching my scalp show through more and more each day, and having a really hard time getting my hair to look good in the morning. It's reached that stage where no hair or a wig's hair would be a better alternative for me than my own hair.
I don't have any suggestions since I'm in the same boat as you, but my plan is to shave it, meet with my local Freedom Hair represetative to order a vacuum wig, and just wear a nice mono-top or full lace wig while it's being made up.
Good luck!!!

Hi Beth,

Check out my profile page for my story and photos of right before I decided to shave. Letting go of doing the shots and other chemicals is a major positive step. I felt great when I did that, and even better once I shaved. I felt like I had control of my life again.

I don't have any hairpiece suggestions because I rapidly lost all of it and am now smooth. Watch my videos for my perspective. Good luck, and remember you're still you, with hair or without!

I haven't shaved my head yet, but I am seriously considering it! I have been having trouble covering up my bald spots a lot lately and am finally to the point where I am DONE! I am done getting shots in my head, done putting chemicals on my head! I'm OVER IT! I am currently trying to find the best possible hair piece for me and then I think I'm going to do it! Any suggestions?? What made you decide to do it???

Hello Sisters,

In case any of you haven't seen it, I want to ask you to take a look at AW member Pam Fitros' discussioin on the National Bald Out Group. Pam is working on a book about women with aa who choose to be bald in public, and she needs our stories. She has a questionnaire to get you started, and everyone will have final approval before anything about them is included. Please think about participating. More info is here:

I made it myself. Just basically copied from a toque.

Where did you get the pattern?
Comment by Pam Glover on May 21, 2009 at 11:01am
Just thought I should add, when youre placing your pattern (mine is made of newpaper lol) on the fabric, be sure that the most stretch is on the opening side. You want the stretch around your face, not over the head. Hope that makes sense.

By the way, the sleep caps are super easy to make. My pattern is a half oval that is 10 1/2 inches long and 9 inches high. I cut the two peices, turn them right side in and sew around the top edge, then sew the "hem". Turn right side out and voila you have your cap. Any stretchy fabric will work, fancy for daywear, tshirt fabric for sleeping.
