Sisterhood of Women who Shaved their Heads

This group is for women who have taken the bull by the horns and decided to shave their heads. It is also for those that aspire to someday shave their head. Hopefully we can provide support, guidance and compassion to one another.

Galena, I've had a number of women who have had cancer come up to me in public and tell me how good it makes them feel to see a bald woman (or a woman wearing a scarf instead of a wig) in public. Holding our bald heads high does more than help our alopecian sisters - it helps and supports those pink sisters, too! I'm so proud to know all of you. Mary

Hello Everyone!
I looked at my drivers’ license and mourned a little yesterday. I can relate to wishing that you could look the way you remember. But Mary is so right; any cancer patient would gladly have baldness be their ONLY trial in life. You gain real perspective when you’ve been through the pain of losing a love one to cancer. I lost a dear friend in 2003 and as beautiful as she was, she would have gladly accepted life-long baldness if it kept her alive to be a mother to her three children. She was so sad and yes angry that she had to leave them—I was too. So for her and the other pink sisters, I keep my bald head held high knowing that I’m embracing my full humanity without apologies.

As for us getting together, if we are unable to pull off a private weekend for us Bald Beauties, does anyone plan to attend the convention in Houston this June?

Yeah like I said most days I dont care that much, I was starting to go Grey anyways so It saves me coloring my hair, Thanks for the upbeat messages. All is good again, just a rough patch for a bit.

Carol, dear...I mourn the woman I used to look at in the mirror, too. I miss her. Tonight I saw some video from Fall 2007 when I still had most of my hair, and I looked SO good (you know what I mean). But, this is who I am, and the woman I see in the mirror now is growing on me, and I would miss her, too.

I don't know if it helps anyone else, but I keep telling myself how damn lucky I am to be healthy and able to be active. I lost a close woman friend to cancer in December...what would she and her husband have given to have her disease be "only" alopecia and not cancer? This kind of thinking doesn't diminish the reality of what we have all lost, but perhaps it can help us focus on what we HAVE. Hugs to all. Mary

Thanks Linda yeah I got over myself and went down to the beach sat on the sand, and than walked and really did not care what people thought, I dont want to spend time crying about hair, so I knew I was being looked at but really no one seemed all that intrested, because really I did not care, And truly there are days when I like being bald,,I just mourn the girl I use to look at in the mirror,, but I would also miss the woman I see nowadays.

Hi Lindsay, welcome to the group, yes...shaving is quite a freeing experience! It's a journey well worth taking.

hello all.... thank you for having this awesome group! i had to join.... because when i first shaved my head it was the most freeing feeling i have had since i have started the alopecia battle..... i would cry and cry and cry every morning after my shower when i had clumps of wet hair in my hands, my roommate autumn said, linds, we gotta do it, we have to shave it.... so i did! laughed and cried and and felt like a crazy person, but it was necessary.... and good thing i did too, cause then all the rest fell out anyways!!!!! who needs hair anyways???? not me! :)

Hi Carol, I've heard of it, had it when I was young, didn't work, still bald, nothing worked on my spots, just destined to have them I guess.

Has anyone ever heard of the ultraviolet light thing some people are talking about. I have heard people say it may work, I know Gail Porter started it and it seemed to work,??
