Sisterhood of Women who Shaved their Heads

This group is for women who have taken the bull by the horns and decided to shave their heads. It is also for those that aspire to someday shave their head. Hopefully we can provide support, guidance and compassion to one another.

Okay, so we're on! Let's look into doing a weekend somewhere nice, inexpensive, heck we could even get rooms on a buddy system, check airfare and set a date. What do you all think, can we do it??? Yes we can!

Discussions, forums, information...all good. But most of all, I just want to hang out with a bunch of bald women!!!! (and meet the women I "talk" with all the time here.)

I'd love to have an affordable meeting of Beautiful Bald Babes or Bald Beauties or Sisters Boldly Being Bald. It would be nice to have forums and discussions in person that relate to our lives.

Everyone - wouldn't it be wonderful if we lived closer together and could meet? Maybe someday we'll arrange a gathering. Thea does the wonderful "Bald Girls Do Lunch" events around the country. What we need is a convention for women who are proudly bald. Can you imagine?!

By the way, in terms of convention locations, San Diego has great weather year-round. ( ;-)

Men still find it hard… I can tell from their reactions. I stood before the class and presented a subject for my train the trainer class this week. Without my wig it was liberating, but the men mostly looked down at their handouts. My male instructor has been looking at me all week (I sat in the back of the room). Overall the class was great and my classmates were great. There will be many more “firsts” to come in the upcoming weeks.

To each of you sisters who have responded and expanded on my inquires; I love you and thank you for your support and encouragement. This forum has lifted and strengthened me emotionally. I know my transition will be difficult at times, but knowing that I’m not alone has made all the difference.

Love,
Galena

Thanks for your support, Sandy. I really wasn't upset...just a little pissed off at first. Good luck this weekend, and just imagine some of us standing there right alongside you! And remember, it gets easier every time.

Yes, it's unfair. GRRR! So my natural reaction is to protest that unfairness and work for "equality" of choice. It's strange to admit this, but as I've gotten more used to being bald, I think that I actually enjoy being different in this way...I feel that I flaunt my "specialness" much of the time. Sure, I'd rather be the "old Mary", but the new one is - increasingly - just fine!

Yes, Thea! I firmly believe that the only way to foster society's acceptance of bald looks as a choice for women is for US to make it happen by just DOING IT! Until women go out in public bald, there's no basis for any cultural change. It's as simple as that. So, those of us who are appearing in public bald are the groundbreakers...let's give ourselves some real credit for doing it!

Coincidentally, while you were all discussing this, I just had another new experience. I was at my doctor's office for annual blood tests, sitting in a large waiting room bald, and a middle-aged man checking in at the desk just STARED at me, full face, not looking away, clearly astonished! (I've never had anyone do this.) I stared back (and because I was in a slightly snarky mood because I'd been kept waiting) said "Yes, I'm bald!" He didn't say anything, and just kept staring, so I repeated it loudly. After he finished checking in, he came over to me and admitted that he'd been taken aback by my appearance. I explained what AA is, and he'd never heard of it. We talked a bit more and I gave him one of my alopecia cards. He told me he has diabetes, and I told him I tell myself all the time how fortunate I am to have good health. All in all, just another positive experience, and a bit of consiousness raising.
