Yes!!! Way to go, Jen!

I was the same way...expecting stares and comments and weird looks, and getting loads of compliments and a few polite questions.

What a great conversation. I have goosebumps! I feel privliged to be part of this group of self-determined, beautiful women. I am often suprised at how many people comment on my beautifully shaped head or on the physical features of my face, no one said things like that when I had hair. I agree with Thea, get your big earrings, your favorite lip gloss, and some fancy perfume (we can afford it, we don't have to pay to have our hair done) and show the world that you aren't sick and that if you do choose to put a scarf or hat on it is simply another accessory--not a tool to hide anything.

Jenn

Thea, I've printed out and saved what you wrote! You said it all, and so well, about it being up to US! What if we had a National Take It Off Day, where women who've lost their hair went out in public bald? Sort of likd the day where people are supposed to go without cigarettes - "National Smoke Out", or something like that. We could call it "National Wig Out". ( ;-)

Yes, Lori, that was me on Shear Genius, only 2 months after I shaved. I would have a much different attitude if I were on that show now: "who needs a wig to look beautiful?!"

Thanks for you kind comments guys and maybe some day I will get the guts to do the bald thing in public. I want to be about 20 pounds thinner first! It sure is nice though to come and talk about these concerns as only you guys gets it...

Mary were you on Sheer Genius? By the way Mary my hair is starting to look like yours did just before you shaved it off. I am not too far away from a date with a razor and not with my legs.....

Went to Trader Joes and a Man asked me about my hairless dome,, I told him there is a group of women God has blessed with not worrying about hair I am one of those chosen to worry about other things, I believe we are 1% of the population right ladies?? I may be wrong but I know its a small number. Anywho told him about Alopecia he had never heard of it. another educated human being.

In large cities, you may see two to three bald women at any given time. I ran into a woman at Big Lots, she had shaved her head, she smiled at me, sort of a kindred spirit smile and I smiled back. She walked over to me and told the story of how she had beat the odds of cancer, but shaved her head in memory of her fight. I explained why I was shaved, we hugged and I have a new friend! Whenever I'm in DC, I see shaved women, one here or there, sometimes it's for fashion and sometimes it's medical, most times, they smile at me with the kindred spirit smile and I can relate.

Wow...talk about your firsts, after shaving...my first time walking outside and thinking OMGosh, I forgot my wig, lol, then realizing, I don't wear wigs anymore, I'm free!

Absolutely! I think it makes a big difference. I always try to just smile and act like there's nothing unusual about me (more and more, that's how I feel). It's really a case of mind over matter - I feel confident and comfortable, and other people just seem to relate to me that way. When someone asks me about my chemotherapy, that reminds me I do look unusual, but that's okay.

This conversation reminds me of a story a wonderful lady once told me at a NAAF conference. She said that when she went bald for the first time she was so expecting people to stare and think mean thoughts that she put up her guard. She said that everybody did stare at her, not because she was bald but because she had such a mean, angry glare on her face they couldn't help it. As soon as her husband pointed it out, she put a smile on her face and everybody smiled right back. I try and remember this when I am out. I keep a smile on my face and no matter how I am feeling that day on the inside people see a confident happy woman.
