I have to add - The first time I saw another alopecian bald woman (in public, or anywhere):

It was you, Thea, in January 2008 at a Bald Girls Do Lunch event. That was a BIG first!

Jen - for a long while, it was a "first" each time I went bald to a new public place: I'd note in my journal the first time to the public library, first time to a department store, first time to the grocery store....Every time, every new place, it got easier!

Jen, welcome to the empowered, alluring, liberated, sexy world of BALD, it really does feel good! I have the same pattern you stated, just found out about 7 years ago about the pattern name, after having Alopecia Areata since I was almost 9. Funny, at one time my hair was long enough to wear an Afro and cover the huge patch in the back, that was in the 70s, lol. My beau shaved me with the clippers this morning, he gets such a kick out of doing it, I let him go for it. For a closer shave you may want to have your husband use a triple edged razor, it gets really close. Otherwise, I enjoy my "dark continents and light oceans" as you call them, they are pretty unique!
Take your time about going out about town, I waited one week after shaving, I played a few scenarios in my head of possible questions, remarks, etc, and how I would answer and then on a beautiful Sunday morning I stepped out into the world, BALD, I haven't looked back, it has been a journey I truly cherish!

Lori - it's okay...if you feel better in a wig, then that's what's right for you! What I advocate is simply that women feel that they have the CHOICE that men have socially, to be seen bald, or to cover their scalp.

Jen - YES, YES, YES! What you're expressing is exactly what I felt a year ago when I shaved. Instant empowerment, and relief from the crying and depression over the bald spots. I went from being SO concerned that one of my expanding bald spots would show at the swimming pool, to walking up to it proudly bald.

About your "pattern"....I only had to shave for a few months before I went AU, but I was able to get it smooth by shaving in the shower. My patches of stubble really didn't show very much. You can see in the photos on my page how much hair I had left the day before I shaved.

My husband is totally fine with it...he even wanted an enlargement of the photo of us together (also on my page) to display in our house.

Lori, whatever makes you comfortable, that is key, we all must do what makes US comfortable, you'll always be a beauty no matter what you choose!

Wish I could be brave like all of you. When I do get around to shaving my head I know I won't be going without a wig in public. I just can't do it......sorry ladies I am a wig gal......

Hi everyone,
welcome to all newcomers. This has been a very exciting journey. I thinking deciding to shave my head was truly a blessing. People really love the look and to date I've only received 1 bad reaction. A couple thought it was funny to point & laugh, however, my husband without knowing what had occurred said, "Dara you are so beautiful." I was floored & touched by his love & support. He can't stop rubbing my head though. Its funny and relaxing. Have a blessed rest of the week. Also I will be speaking in April & May at UMKC during the Black Women's Leadership Conference & covet your prayers.
Much love,
dara

I feel you Mary on the wig wearing, I have not worn one since I shaved my head in July 08 and I seriously don't know how I survived the past 40 something years without my shaved head. Wigs are soooo uncomfortable to me now, even when I put a wig cap or underscarf on with them.
Yvonne thanks for sharing that card advice with the website, I'm working on my new ones now. I wish I had them when I was in DC during the Inauguration, a man walked up to me and said, "your shaved head reminds me of the 60s when women were shaving their heads in protest of the 'establishment'," he then asked me what I was protesting. I smiled and said, "I have Alopecia" gave him a card and kept it moving. I glanced back to find that he had taken a seat on a bench and was reading the card. He'll have another story to tell about Inauguration Day in DC! If it had my website on it, I could answer more questions for him, I'm sure he had more after reading the card!

I haven't worn a wig in so long, I can't remember exactly - maybe 3 months. If I wore one now, especially around any of my friends who've seen me bald, I would feel weird. And I WOULD feel like I'm hiding. This is who I am now.
