Hi everyone - hope you're all having a great Saturday. I am still about... :o) enjoying reading all your posts and stories. I think it is a really good idea about the business cards/the website. I might fix something up myself so when people ask me I can say. At the moment I am not shaved as I find it too cold and I am wearing a wig again, but I still get people asking me about my 'hair' and being an honest soul 9 times out of 10 I am open that it is a wig. It is much better to educate people than hide away and wonder why no one understands you... we have to give people a chance right? I hate the fact that when I had a shaved head, people seemed to think it meant I had cancer!

I've been meaning to make up some cards about Alopecia - this gives me an idea. I'm going to put the YouTube title names for the two videos I have up about Alopecia!

Yesterday was my one year anniversary of shaving my head. I do feel proud, and strong and special.

Yvonne, thanks for the idea to put my website on my cards, I have some but they only have the definition of Alopecia on the one side and the symptoms of Alopecia on the other. Adding a website will give the curious more insight and understanding to what Alopecia is.
Nants, I love this group too! When I shaved my head I felt so empowered, now I wouldn't have it any other way, and yes...we are SPECIAL!!!!

Linda,
I have had a similar encounter where a child asked questions about my baldness to their parent but kind of loud enough for me to hear and the parent told the child to ask me herself...which gave me an opportunity to educate both of them. I happen to keep business card with my web address directing them to read "my hair story or lack of hair story" blog and I tell them I have Alopecia, a skin condition that causes hair loss. I love the fact that that parent was just as curious to know what was going on as much as the child instead of trying to ignore the question and she gladly took the card and stated to child they would go home and read about it...

Maybe if you had a card to give to that parent she would have learned something along with her child which maybe could have also taught that child not to be so rude with comments to someone who looks different than she does... I know you tried with the little girl, but we sometimes have to educate the young parents who are not capable of doing it for their kids!! :)

Emma,
That makes all the sense in the world!!! Yes you do feel liberated after letting go that shame.

Linda,
I feel you are very brave for trying to explain it...Kids are so innocent and have no clue - which is why I would probably do the same thing.
For her mother...it seems strange that she would ignore you - but living in a very judgmental world, it doesn't shock me to hear this...
I would assume her mother probably has no clue what Alopecia is. I am learning that unless somebody has been faced with this themselves or a loved one..they have no idea what it is.
And one thing I just noticed...ALOPECIA AREATA shows up on here as a spelling mistake....hmmmm....that's kinda interesting!

Okay, let me tell this story one more time, everytime I write it, then read it, I don't like how it sounds...I was in the grocery store, in the checkout lane, when a little girl about 4 or 5 years old who was behind me in line, said "you like a boy". Startled, I looked at her mother who looked away, again, the little girl said, "you like a boy", again her mother said nothing nor would she look my way. The adorable little girl with a determined look on her face looked up at me and again stated, "you like a boy". I stooped down beside her, so that we were about the same height and said, I'm a girl, I have Alopecia, it makes my hair fall out. She said, "you like a boy", by now we had a small audience, her mother still hadn't said a word. I smiled and said to her, "you're like a girl". Puzzled, she didn't say another word, she looked as if she was pondering what I said. I stood up, paid for my groceries and left. She was the cutest little thing, I hope her mother explained to her what Alopecia is.

Love the art, Yvonne, girl you GOT talent!
I'm taking a break from my taxes, whew, I hate taxes!
Okay, so today, after all these years, I wake up and one of my eyebrows is "arched" and I didn't do it! So...I look exotic in one eye and "normal" on the other eye, lol, I guess I'll have to get my eyebrows arched now, never had that done before...

Check out one of my Art pieces:

As far as wigs go, you have to look at them as an accessory too...just like a pair of earrings or shoes. And that's how I buy them, by the color and style to match outfits now! :)
