I have to say I truly understand and I am so glad for you Dara! Finally being able to say to yourself that you want to free yourself of the shame of having a few hair strains is so liberating...when I finally did shave my head after 2 years of hiding the pieces, my husband told me later of course... "I don't know what took you so long to shave it, because I saw a new you inside and out once you did!" And I felt it too! :) Congrats Girl!!!

Linda, you could not have said it better! Quote: "I was chained to hair pieces by Alopecia"!

I love it!!! Keep on doing you, My "Sisterhood of Women who Shaved their Heads"!!! :)

Re Galina's comment: "I don't know about you, but with that wig I feel like an impostor."

I feel the same way! Now that I've gotten used to being bald or just wearing a scarf, when I put the wig on I feel totally false. If I see friends who have been around me bald, I feel ridiculous in the wig. I haven't worn the wig in a couple of months...I may never wear a wig again, except maybe for Halloween.

When people ask me why I don't wear a wig (or tell me how NICE I look in the wig and imply that I look better wearing it than bald), I ask them if they've ever worn one. I've even offered to let friends wear mine for an hour! No one has taken me up on it.

Congrats Christie, welcome to the world of the "Shaved Ones"! I tried wearing a wig after shaving and it bothered me so much I could not. Try a wig cap first, it will keep the netting, dyes and other foreign matter that it takes to make a wig, from directly touching your scalp.

Dara, I know the feeling, my first big event was my little sister's wedding, the compliments were plenty and having the support of my man and children lifted me to new heights. I'm sure folks at a Cornell West function could appreciate your baldness, my older brother told me that back in the days of the Civil Rights Movement, some of the women used to shave their heads in protest. I get a lot of questions about that, like okay, why did you shave, to make a statement? LOL, I say no and yes, the statement, "I am free", the reason, "I was chained to hair pieces by Alopecia"!

Hi Linda,
well I went to my first major social event bald. Wow, it was amazing how supportive people were and how many compliments I received. My husband was so proud as we walked into he UMKC to hear Cornell West speak. I was so greatful to God for Cortez's love and support. Thanks again for everyone's words of encourgement & comfort.

Well....It's done!!
Last night was good - My oldest daughter helped to cut my hair off, and then we all took turns shaving it. My wig feels itchy on my head, so I will need some time to get used to that.
It has been rather emotional today - But it can only go up from here!!

shaving my head was incredibly liberating. to me, it was like I told AA that i'm in control.. not matter how much or how little hair it had left me with. i am so glad i did it.. and am stronger because of it.

By the way ladies. BGDL has me thinking that I really should stop the prednisone/methotrexate treatment. I'm almost half-way through treatment and I'm just seeing wild sparse strands of white hair. What do you all think? I just don't think I can do this until April 10th.

Hi Christie:-) It's normal to have those mixed emotions. When I shaved mine off on September 30, 2008, I felt the presence of my dearly departed best friend Tracy. She succumbed to breast cancer in 2003. As I was shaving, I was laughing and I could "feel" her laughing with me. It was a comforting and exhilarating moment. Make your first shave your moment- it is a day when you take back some control. But I do understand the wig and feeling less desirable. You said your man is supportive-mine is too. At first thought I looked hideous and I refused him for a while. He was patient and waited a couple of weeks for me to get a handle on my loss-he tried just being attentive. Pretty soon everything was okay. Personally, I believe when I can shed the wig in public and not be overly noticed in a bad way, I can reclaim my sex appeal. I don't know about you, but with that wig I feel like an impostor.
