Sisterhood of Women who Shaved their Heads

This group is for women who have taken the bull by the horns and decided to shave their heads. It is also for those that aspire to someday shave their head. Hopefully we can provide support, guidance and compassion to one another.

you could exclaim excitedly to the child, saying "where? where's the lady with no hair??"

I've been rocking this bald look for about 3 years and to be honest I mostly don't give it another thought when I'm out and about. To approach the world with head held high and a smile on my face, I find most people take my lead and are accepting of this look. Regarding the comments from naive children, it doesn't get us anywhere to be offended or upset. I just smile back and offer a comment like, "I know!! It's kind of funny to see a lady without hair!" My easy going nature and smile speaks volumes. No shame or secrets or embarrassment. I think this teaches children that people can look different and yet still be happy, healthy, nice and friendly. I've had a parent scoop their child up and turn away from me as if to protect the child. I want kids to know that they needn't be scared or uncomfortable around me. I'm happy and healthy and just fine!!

I don't take that shouting as bad manners. Kids are the only ones who tell their thoughts straight on. Most adults can't anymore. They just think and sometimes stare. And kids are just surprised, to see a thing they never saw before. If I answer them, generally I say in an astonished way: Look at that boy/girl. (S)he has hair! ;-)

I should try that next time a child points and yells. I can usually ignore the yells but its the pointing that drives me nuts.

I do that already, Mary!

There are just some things, despite the desire for awareness that I just will NOT tolerate. Ill-mannered children and ignorant parents that think such rudeness is at the top of the list. You would think that stuff like that would embarrass them, but no - they're just oblivious!!!

I've been thinking that the next time a kid says something like that (especially if they shout), I'm going to respond "That child doesn't have any manners." Would that be bad of me? ( ;-)

After about two years of beeing bald in public, I forget about it most of the time, sometimes I take it as an easy way to have my personal style, sometimes I just look at the others, thinking, that anyway we are all so different, that baldness is just one of these different ways to be. And each time when I hear a kid saying that "Mommy, that lady has no hair", I am rather happy, because the most important thing in this sentence is 'that lady', means that hair is not necessary to be recognised as a woman.

Thanks, Nancy. After 3 1/2 years of being bald, I really am at a point where I just don't think about it - until someone asks me the cancer question, or some kid says "Mommy, that lady doesn't have any hair!" It really is just who I am now. Did you see my recent video of me dancing at an outdoor event? 3 years ago, I couldn't have imagined doing it. Now, I didn't even think about it. I basically don't care. I don't know how I got to this place, except that I did it and this became the new me.
