Hi,

I live in South London and have A.A. started 4 years ago on my beard - most of that has fully regrown now, apart from a patch on my neck.

About 2 years ago now around the time my company was going through re-structure and making redudancies I had my first patch on the back of my head (about the size of a 10p coin) with a couple of months 3 similar sized patches all around the same spot appeared.

I had quite long hair, so I kept growing it, doing my best to hide it. However the patches got bigger and bigger, and I became more paranoid about it.

After a long chat with my wife, I decided to shave off my hair and stop pretending. Its been 3 days now and im still coming to terms with my new look, but I do feel somewhat liberated from the fear of being exposed.

My kids have been really supportive and my 6 year old son said to me after shaving off my hair, "dad, you've got a heart shape on the back of your head, cos you love us so much!", wow children really do know how to make you feel good.

anyways thats my story....

Hello Aimee,

The eyebrow tattoo works like this.

Within 2 -3 weeks you may see the colour fade away, this is normal...... let me explain, and what I will try to explain is how the makeup works, this applies to everyone not just people with alopecia. When it is first carried out the makeup is placed into the dermis, the tissue under your skin (skin= epidermis) so what we are seeing on the first days, says 1-4-5-6- is a double view, this is why it always looks 30-40% darker. the pigment is in the dermis, but is also sitting right on top of the epidermis, making it appear darker.

So to shorten and recap, you are viewing under and on top at first (maybe they can make this a sticky I love explaining it helps others.

I do things my own unique way, (in the UK, I was in New York last week) and what I do is unique to myself. your permanent makeup should always be carried out twice, I say ask you technician if this needs a third application will there be a charge.

But it should always be carried out twice. The reason for this is..... if the work is attempted in one go this will be far to heavy, there is always a change this can blur(hairstrokes and brow border) and pull the wrong colour.

Work soft with multi applications is the best way, always. The second application should be carried out around 4 weeks after the first, then we go from there. In the second application the brows should be fully reworked again, not just the gaps filled in.

Hairstroke, its a buzz word and some may call it something else, its the same thing, small strokes to mimic hairs. They are not always the best, on some they can be too light, and the persons face shape would look better with a powder brow. They fade a lot quicker, as there is less area covered. I like a powder brow, with some definition and texture added, its just what I favour

With alopecia, your body has rejected your own hair follicle, sometimes it can do this with the pigment, but this is only slightly and I don't normally have problems, for this is the reason I say above about the third appointment, many will not need this but its good to know its there.

You can tell my experience is beyond the norm, certainly with alopecia clients. I get very angry when others claim this. The work needs a different approach, placement, shape and application are critical....

If I have helped someone today I have done my job, all the best. Heidi Worman

Hi,

So glad there is a UK forum. I hope I get a chance to meet some of you in person but it is nice to know there is a cyber community in any case! Here's my story:

I live outside of London and until recently had long, healthy hair.

In July I noticed a lot of hair coming out when I showered. Then I noticed my hair seemed different in texture and looked odd. For days, weeks, months, I rained hair all over my bathroom, stood in front of mirrors, angling to see how bad my hair looked. Was it worse dry (no) ? Wet (yes)? Newly washed (passable)? After the end of the day(disaster)?

Four inches trimmed off, six inches trimmed off. I looked for patches but found none. I noticed that it was thin everywhere and anywhere, with new branched partings. The pony tail became thinner and thinner so I had to wrap the elastic around three times.

I started using Nioxin shampoo to stop the itching on what appeared an otherwise clean, healthy scalp. I began laser treatments. I bought a new hat. I bought another hat. I began vitamins and evening primrose oil, iron, magnesium, vitamin D. I gave up gluten.

From the GP I got a thyroid panel done and eventually a referral to an endocrinologist. I found out I have thyroid antibodies. I started on thyroxine and bought a wig in case it didn't help.

The hair still comes out. No patchiness, no apparent reason. I have a bad feeling about where it will end up, but know now that I can cope if it all goes. Just about, anyway.

I'm in my 40's. I'm losing my hair. I ought to be more insane about this, but when I see the photos of you guys and you look so good, I am cheered up.

Did anyone catch the alopecia segment on GMTV a couple of weeks ago? Very beautiful girl (woman I suppose) chatting to Lorraine Kelly and went wig free towards the end of the interview even though she pretty much always wears hair.
