Hey everyone,
It is difficult for me to commit to anything during the day for the next while. I have committed to doing some 'on call' work so won't know until closer to the date if I am available.

Greetings all.

It doesn't sound like the 4th words for anyone, in terms of those who have posted. I don't want to engage Enzina's group and any children if we cannot show them a large sense of the Vancouver community, so let's set International Alopecia Day aside for this year.

Cheers.

Dana: Right now that sounds good, but waiting until my sister comes home and has a definite date for my niece to head off to college. We want to spend as much time with her before she goes as we can. Congratulations to your son. Very exciting. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for opening up your house to us.

Another thing that the book mentioned is that only 3-5% of people with gluten intolerances are diagnosed correctly.

This is also from Dummies.com - gluten free:
Beware of aliases like flour, bulgur, semolina, spelt, frumento, durum (also spelled duram), kamut, graham, einkorn, farina, couscous, seitan, matzoh, matzah, matzo, and cake flour. Often marketed as a “wheat alternative,” none of these is even remotely gluten-free.

Keep these few additional wheat-related details in mind:

Derivatives of gluten-containing grains aren’t allowed on a gluten-free diet. The most common derivative you have to avoid is malt, which usually comes from barley. If malt is derived from another source, such as corn, that fact usually appears on the label. If not specified, though, don’t eat it.

Triticale is a made-up grain — a hybrid of wheat and rye. Inventors developed it to combine the productivity of wheat with the ruggedness of rye, not just to add another grain to your list of forbidden foods. And relatively speaking, it’s fairly nutritious for people who can eat gluten.

Wheat starch is actually wheat that’s had the gluten washed out. In some countries, a special type of wheat starch called Codex Alimentarius wheat starch is permitted on the gluten-free diet — but it’s not allowed in North America, because some people question whether the washing process completely removes all residual gluten.

You can find a complete listing of gluten-free foods and gluten-containing foods at Celiac.com.

We need to talk more about this Chris. This is significant.

I would really like to stick to the 4 August event, as it is International Alopecia Day. So it is not so much about THIS group meeting, as a chance for all Vancouver alopecians to gather. This was really brought home by meeting the 4 yr old boy at NAAF.

I will continue to coordinate this event and those interested should contact me. Again, simple plan. Bring your own food to Locarno Beach between 3 and 5 on Saturday 4 August.

I will contact the young boy's family, as well as Enzina.

: ) Cheers all.

btflbaldgrrl: I had a glance at my friend's book "Wheat Belly" - I couldn't believe where gluten is hidden - some mustards, ketchup, miso, packaged soups, packaged sauces, vodka, soy sauce, processed sandwich meat, some salad dressings. In fact, just about everything that is processed has some form of gluten in it. I have been 95% gluten free and mostly organic for the past 3 months and will now aim for 100% - I see all my body hair starting to reappear and today I found two eyelashes! This is big for me - I lost all my eyebrows and eyelashes last summer due to a major gluten binge (looking back). I am doing a lot of other work as well, so I am sure that the combination of diet and other holistic things is turning the alopecia around.

Yes.. we should watch Food Inc - it is a life changing doc. It looks as though people are busy in Aug - so why don't we shoot for Sept - I am happy to host at my place on the North Shore.
