Morning All! (Afternoon -s orry)...

Do most of your wash and dry your wig in the shower? Do you style it yourselves? I've not gotten to that brave point and have only washed it once - let it air dry as styling it was hard for me ... I took it to the salon and they were fabulous but I can't go there every time it needs a wash. Sink washing is tough as my hair is longer -

So ... I guess I'd love to know who showers with it - who washes in the sink and who takes it in for professional treatments and then -when you style - do you do it with your usual products (or the ones recommended by the newsletter?)

Happy Holidays all -

I found a good hair stylist who knows a lot about human hair wigs and asked him a LOT of questions.  When I had my own hair I never did any styling .. basically just wash & comb .. so I was pretty intimidated about trying to do anything with my freedom wig.  My stylist told me to wash the wig in a sink but make an effort to work with the hair in the downward direction from the top.  So I lather up the shampoo in my hands and work it through the wig that way and then rinse it in the tub where I can pour lots of cool water through it (again working from the top down).  Same with the conditioner.  Then I sit it wrapped in a towel for an hour or so to soak up some of the water.  I bought a hair dryer that has a good cool setting.  It doesn't have to be a really expensive dryer, but should be one that has a cool option.  I would not even attempt to dry the hair without my foam head and stand.  I've attached a photo of that setup.  The foam head holds the wig in place pretty well.  I bought a circular hair brush and I just kind of play around with pulling the hair to the side with the brush & letting the cool air from the hair dryer get to it all around.  I'm sure that anyone who spent any time at all styling their own real hair would find this really easy.  For me it's just a matter of getting the hang of the brush & dryer together.  That's why having the foam head is so important ... the wig stays put!  Then I move the wig back to it's normal stand.  Hope that helps!

Thank you for your great advice! I really appreciate your taking the time to write this out. I did get the stand - and have washed it - turned out great! I'm getting a blow out on the 31st so happy with that. It's the fear of doing it wrong the first time you style. I DID get a brush tangled and it would not come out - finally fixed it but BOY was that scary! Threw that brush a way!

Hi there,

Since I had my freedom wig, I always struggled with the styling part as well as I never was able to style my natural hair very well.  I wash my hair on my own and let it air dry.  Every 2 1/2-3 weeks, I go to a stylist with clean dry hair and he curls it for me and it stays well for 2-3 weeks since I don't sleep or exercise with it on.  I didn't like going to him to wash it because it would always come loose and that made me uncomfortable but the styling always works out great and then I don't have to be frustrated with the styling part and he always does a much better job then I could ever do...hope that helps!

HI Nancy - thank you! I let mine air dry a bit then did a round brush that got tangled in it. I just purchased a cool styler and that really seemed to help. Do you wash the inside out each night and if so - how do you keep the hair dry when you pour the water out each night? I keep getting water on the bangs and have to redo them which worries me regarding their length of life!  How long have you had yours by the way? Again, thank you for taking the time to respond!

Hi

I have always found hair styling fun and easy to do.  (My aunties where professional hairdressers but I have never been trained), I just like to do it (must be in the genes :)).  I've always styled my own hair once it was cut and still do so.

My daughter wears a few different style freedom wigs and I tend to help her style the shorter hairpieces as it is a skill that takes a while to learn.  I'm always aware with her hairpiece that it should not be tugged her styled unnecessarily, but I also understand that with 100% unprocessed virgin human hair, it just behaves like everyone elses hair and often needs a little encouragement to reach that end style that you feel good in.

With her longer hairpieces we wash, condition and then leave to dry naturally.  Sometimes with her dark long hair I will use the GHD's on it (with the appropriate protectant) as she like to wear that particular hairpiece long and straight.

So, we don't really use a professional hairstylist in a regular way with Libby's hair.  :) But I do think it can be a great alternative if you find your hair difficult to style yourself.

Rebecca - yes you must clean your cap every time you wear your hairpiece.  If you have the latest DVD from Freedom (if you haven't got this contact your IA and ask for one). On the DVD it shows how to wash your hairpiece.  There is a little blue loofer used in the DVD, this is what Libby and I use to clean the inside of her hairpiece.  Using this we don't have to tip water out of the cap as we are able to clean and rinse with it, then dry with a face cloth.  Hope that helps.  I believe the loofers are available in the USA (as Karen Peterik gave us ours).

Hugs

I found a great and easy way to get that blow out look.  First I wash the hair while its on my head in the shower, I love that. It makes me feel normal again:)  I use alterna professional shampoo and conditioner.  When I condition, I use a wide tooth comb and comb the conditioner in the hair and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then I rinse while still wearing it in the shower.  After I am done, I let my hair airdry until it is about 85 percent dry and I place it on my suction cup foam stand that the wig came with and I section my hair in little sections and I use my wigo hot air brush on a low setting and comb it throught  each section until it is straight and dry in a way that i am lifting the root.  The wigo hot airbrush is nice because you will never get the bristles stuck in the hair because they are retractable. I love it.  I also put morrocan oil in my hair before to protect it.  I love morrocan oil. It makes the hair so soft and shiny.

Hope that helps,

Shannon

Shannon - thank you! Best advice ever! I could not find the wigo hot air brush - so I purchased the Instyler rotating brush. (Got a brush caught in my hair and almost died!)...I'm going to follow your advice and see how that works...I too love washing it in the shower.

You are wonderful - enjoy your Holiday! GREAT HAIR and GREAT YOU in that photo!

I got the wigo hot air brush on amazon I believe. Google it and you can order it online. It is the best!!

Take care,

Have a great Christmas!!

Thank you for the advice Shannon. I will try that also. I googled the wigo hot hair brush and noticed it on Amazon but, its sold out! Yikes! Must be very popular! I will try again. I too love to wash my FW in the shower. The current 14 inch one I have has highlights in it and a slight wave in it (I think?) and so since this summer I have been going to my stylist and she has been washing my FW and blow dry and style for me. I go see her about every 3 weeks. It was very nice to do but, I agree it does get pricey. I see it as, since I can't get manicures any more (being a dental hygiene student) I can get my hair done and it will last 3-4 weeks and its a nice stress relief from school. My new one I hope to wash and style myself and get a shampoo and blow-out once in awhile or for special occassions. This new fw that I will get cut and styled on Tuesday is darker in color and is straight. I think in the past I have ordered movement or slight wave. I can't remember. Either way I can't wait for a new year style for the new year!
This is the link to the wigo hot air brush for anyone interested in buying one. http://www.amazon.com/Wigo-1000-Brush-tangle-bristles/dp/B00166BH2W...

I ordered the wigo! thank you! I couldn't find a place that was not sold out so your link was very helpful Shannon! You rock!

Merry Christmas girl and a VERY Happy New Year!

Rebecca

I finally got around to using the wigo hot air brush! Love it! Very easy to use and my do it myself blow-out at home looks just as good as the ones I have been paying for! Yay! Thank you Shannon for recommending this amazing tool!
