I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
Thanks Cheryl, Seeing the courage young people display kind of makes it seem like a no brainer for people our age!!! Are there good blogs on treatment success/failure? I'm not hopeful.......just stubborn :)
Cherly-thanks for the comment...I'm so excited about finding this website/support. I have needed something like this for years. I couldn't wait to get home from work today to get back on the website and read more info. Thanks for your hard work and effort on the website. Look forward to more contact in the future.
Thanks Cheryl, I debated about joining as I am so busy with Kids, Husband, our farm, and my part time job at the hospital. I rarely have time for the computer. I know it is great to connect with others who know exactly how it feels to be going through life as a "bald woman" It has it's pros and cons, and I spend most of my time enjoying to pros....
Talk to you soon
Hi Cheryl,
I am just now getting back to the wonderful messages of thoughts and prayers for my daughter, Kristin. I had the best sleep in 10 days last night because she is home from the hospital. Thank you for thinking of us and your prayers were heard loud and clear. I just wrote to RJ too and I hope you both are having a wonderful time in Kentucky. I'm sad that I am not there with you all but very happy that Kristin is home! Tell everyone hello for me and I'm missing them. I will see you all next year.
Love and Hugs,
Dotty

Hi Cheryl,
Thank you so very much for the warm welcome. I enjoy looking at this wonerful site. It is helping day by day to cope with my Alopecia. I am not yet at the stage where I can go without a scarf or cap but you are an inspiration and I hope to get there some day soon. Thank you.
i think you are 100% right, seeing other people with the same thing knowing you are not alone is the best kind of help. this was all she needed was to see other people out there like her. thank you for creating this site.
It was great to see you at the conference, Cheryl. I like RJ. You guys were like rock stars there. I am telling people that need support help about the web-site. I'm spreading the word!
Babe, thanks for inviting me to accompany you to this year's NAAF conference. I now have a much better understanding of why this annual event means so much to you. See ya in Houston! With all my love, rj :-)
Baltimore Betsy sends her love ! It was GREAT meeting your rj and seeing you again - Quite frankly I'm happy to be home and back in my routine. Sightseeing in ky was fun, but I did not find the conference that beneficial. Please keep in touch. I treasure our shared confidences and welcome your friendship. xo betsy
Thanks so much for your kind thoughts. I acutally have been on the beach in Mexico for the last week!! The wedding was beautiful and went off without a hitch. And I already changed my page!! ;o)
Thanks Cheryl for the message! I look forward to meeting alot of nice people and enjoying their comments. It was good to see you at the conference and meeting RJ. Good Luck and God Bless you as you start a life together. Cindy
it was great to see you too. yea im a vet but proud of it. i was lucky to find the conferences when i did. i would be the person i am with out all the great people to look up to like you. especially to see someone that looked like me was awesome as a teen for me.
aw, thank you so much! you'r so sweet! i was so excited to see you and RJ, it was great to get to see both you two, and all the wonderful people i have met on this site. Thanks for your support, you are awesome! =)
Cheryl,
TYou and RJ have created a wonderful site and I am excited to be a member! Can you give me information about advertising as well? I would like your members to know that in addition to living with AU for 18 years, I have not only found my own personal hair loss solution, but can possibly be of service to those looking for the same thing.
Thanks much,
Karen
Stockholm is wonderful in the summers. I think people like Stockholm because the old buildings with lots of water around the city. Its really nice. You are welcome =)
Hi cheryl, thanks for your nice comment. I'm Ok, been a bit down lately (bursting into tears when i see a pot of my old pink hair dye, that sort of thing) i want to be brave enough to just walk out of my house without a wig or a bandana and not care what people think but I'm not there yet. I actually think I would be happier if it all fell out as the nice pink patches compared with the blue five o clock shadow look so ugly. My head is sore from razoring it too.
I'll get through this but when the doc told me the other day that he thinks it is highly unlikely that it will ever grow back it set me back a bit. I miss my hair still, I miss dying it, cutting it and styling it....I was my hair and now it has gone I don't know who I am.
I hope you're ok...

I suppose that will happen after 13 years of conferences. I am so happy you made this site, it is a lot easier to communicate with friends, sometimes it is hard to find time to pick up the phone and call and this is a simply substitute!
Haha, yes great minds think alike! The job is going pretty good. I love being involved in the sport again. The kids are great with the exception of one or two that just don't know how to behave. But there are always kids like that in a group. How are you doing?
LOL if you wanna play with the fridge you just click clear, click and drag the letters and click save. :)
Thanks for stopping by my page, Cheryl. I'm doing well, how about yourself? I feel so much better now that I've shaved my hair off. No more watching my hair fall out by the handfuls anymore. Hoorah! I actually am seeing a lot of new white hair recently, too. Cross your fingers that they stick around!
Hi Cheryl - I am doing well, thank you for asking! I don't have much time to really sit down for long periods of time because of my work (I own a furniture business) but I pop in and out during down times and read different posts and try to keep in touch with some friends I have made here. I really really wish that you were around when I was first diagnosed because I cannot imagine what a positive impact it would have made on me and help me through those initial feelings of worry and wondering. You and Richard have done a wonderful thing here and I think we can all tell what caring and kind people you both are. I hope you are well and enjoying your summer!!
