About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

    Dear LeslieAnn:
Hi, it's Cynthia. I just wanted to thank you so very much for telling me about the DVD fron NAAF. I got 2 copies, 1 for us and 1 for the school. It is AMAZING! The teacher showed it to her class and the kids were very good about it all. The dvd will be shown to all classes in the school so that all the kids will be informed. Thanks again for the great advice!

Leslie, I purchased your book recently, and before I really got a chance to dive into it, my roommate decided she wanted to read it. She read the entire thing and loved it. I now sometimes wonder if perhaps she knows more about alopecia than I do. Now that she is informed she can describe to people what I have other than, "a disorder that makes her hair fall out" she knows all about it, thanks to you. I so love the cover of your book that I purchased a print and it now hangs in our living room. For one of my classes (Intro to Visual Culture) we were assigned a progressive writing assignment in which we were supposed to pick some form of visual culture and give a complete analysis breaking down any connotations we could pick up on. I chose to do "Bald Boogie" I am in the process of writing this paper, and on the denotative assignment I received a 100%. I've come to appreciate yours and every other artists work in artwork now that I have a different way of viewing it. =)

Hi Leslie Ann - thank you so much for your message. I have ordered your book today - & having read the comments about it, I can't wait for it to arrive! I am normally a very confident person, but having to get a wig has made me feel very frightened & introverted. Your wigs look amazing - I hope mine will too!
    Thank-you again. Sooze.

    Hi LeslieAnn,

Your profile was awsome, I would Love to make you a wig, though what you wear looks great. We have go to meet one day, I think we can exchange good imput that would enhance each others lives, I respect to publishing a Book or short story and or just sharing my experience and my gift in making personalize wigs. I do not have the connection to go forth in either of them and maybe you can share or connect me to indiviuals who can help me get directed and started in this passion of mine to offer my talents.
    Please keep in touch.

Many thanks,Leslie.I have been trying to gird myself to do something about publicising this condition.I hope I'll be able to do it now.I don't think there are many Alopecians in India but at least I can start.Your book seems wonderful.I'll definitely lay my hands on it.I'm being treated with Ayurvedic medicines which have helped me considerably so I hope that I can manage.

  • NINI

LeslieAnn, thanks for the welcome and for the sweet comments about my little Chloe. Your precious baby is adorable also. I also love, love, love the purple shoes in your photos. I would die for those. LOL. I ordered your book after about a month of this illness and I can't tell you how much it did for my self esteem. It brought me to a new place. I really didn't think that I could ever accept this but I have came along way. I'm not saying that I don't still have rough days but I am surviving a lot better. I still pull your book out and read it at least once a week. My daughter and husband keep saying "are you reading that again"? I just want to say thanks for writing an excellent book and helping so many people to accept what cannot be changed.
  • Serina Doherty

Hm, I might just get your book for myself. It's gotten such high praise from so many people!! I wonder if I would be able to get it through HMV?
  • Maygensmom

Thank you for your comments. You are right, it is hard as a mother to see my beautiful daughter struggle to have hair. When she was 3 she lost every piece of hair on her body...peach fuzz and all. We started the drops when she was 3 and has since used them everytime a patch would occure. This year Maygen has started to loose many many patches all over. I see hair everywhere....on her sheets, on her floor, in her shower, on her clothes.....It is hard because she is 13. I know how cruel kids can be. I am a teacher, so I see the devistation that hurtful words leave on kids. Any advice you have, I would appreciate greatly. Thank you for your time. I am also going to order your book. My daughter is an advid reader, so we can read it together.
  • Serina Doherty

Oh HMV is an online store too but I'll check out Amazon. And yup, I'll let you know how I find it :) And a hug back!
  • Ella

Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Your artwork is absolutely fantastic, you are extremely talented. I have been reading some fantastic peer reviews of your book as well as ones from your fellow authors such as “A great read. It’s like ‘Sex and the City meets alopecia areata!’” — Ann Wall Frank, Author. I think I will be ordering myself a copy. I look forward to breaking free from this prison I have built for myself and engaging the world again...thank you.
  • Lori

    Hey Doll!

I ordered your book from Amazon. It's on backorder and I can't wait for it to finally be here!

Hope all is going well for you. Things around here are crazy, my oldest is getting ready to go overseas so tomorrwo is packing/arguing day. Packing never goes smoothly around here!

    Take Care,
    Lori

I reada little bit of anothers coment to you about wig flying off during an accident in a car..oh my..I have one for your next book wig flying off while on a rollercoster with a 21/2 year....then picking it up from the dirt going to the bathroom picking out the leaves and sticks and deciding well this is still a good famiily outing straighten up and get back out there. I think I was to shocked to be that embarrassed. I be came invisible in that moment...It's actually on video too..I have never watched but it's out there at a realtives home in a closet....
I guess you have heard every kind of hair story hun..
  • Lyndsey

Thank you for the warm welcome! I read all the wonderful comments about your book and I am going to add your book to my reading list. We're all dealing with this as it is dealt to us. We had to switch pediatricians just to get a diagnosis as the first one kept telling us nothing was wrong.
  • Melea Allen

Thank you for the warm welcome. I had a doctor tell me when I was 16 and all my hair fell out and grew back that it would probably fall out again when I was 30. Well 29 hit and it came in full force. Some days I am ok. Others its hard to look at myself. I am just glad there is a place I can come and express my feeling to others who share in this. Thank you so much and I look forward to reading your book in the future as well. I see many wonderful things being said about it.
  • Melody

    I read your book.
    I laughed.
    I cried.
    I enjoyed your art.

Most of all, it helped me to accept my new image. I've always thought of bald women as being beautiful. I just never thought I would be a beautiful bald woman!
Thank you for your help. I would recommend this to anyone. Especially people with newly formed Alopecia.
My stepmother is currently reading it. She says it is very enlightening.

I hope you have a great day. I was just overdue for stopping in to give some praise. :]
  • Carol

Thanks!!! I will ask my aunt to get me a copy of your book. I'm not sure if you're book is available here in the Philippines. I've had alopecia universalis for 45 years now and it has been a difficult and challenging journey for me. Everyday I have to affirm myself and remind myself that I am beautifully and wonderfully made by God.
  • Sonia

Hi! Thanks for the hugs, and I'm returning them too!
I really hope I get a chance to read your book, honestly- I've heard so many great things about it! I also think it's really cool that you live in Portland, my parents used to live there when my sister was really young.

  • Alexandra Rinderer

    Hi LeslieAnn,
Thanks for the nice welcome! As it turns out I'm a dancer or used to be and I am struggling with that as well. I'm working on getting myself to teach again, but taking a break at the moment to let myself take everything in. A little at a time. I have to check out your book! I love pet pics!
  • Sooze

Hi Leslie-Ann - I still haven't received your book! The US distributor is waiting for stock apparently. I am doing great - amazing how much better I feel in the month or so since I got my wig! I still feel low sometimes but my confidence is back again & I keep positive. Would be much easier if I had a partner to share it all with but my family & friends are fantastic. Great to hear from you & hope you are well. x
  • Merari's Page

Thank you for your comment. We are looking forward to reading your book.
  • Georgie

Hi Leslieann!! I am soooooo excited. I just picked up your book today from the library and started reading it during my 3 yr. old's dance class. Your writing style is so refreshing.....it's a relief to read something from someone who has been through it all. I live in Portland, too! :)
