I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
The tree trimming was really fun. It looks so pretty with all the lights and shiney ornaments.
I love to decorate. I guess you do too.. I'll take some pics and post them.
Matt and I had our Third "Bald Boyz do Lunch" today with 2 other alopecians Rebecca and Heather. They are both on this site as well.
Cant wait for the next confrence and Leo is coming this time so you will get to meet him in person.
I hope your holiday season is going smashingly!!!
Thank you so much, Cheryl for the warm welcome!
I am so grateful & excited to have found this group.......I can't wait to get to know others who know what it's like to be me!
Cheryl, I just wanted to thank you for the warm welcome!
I'm so excited & so grateful that I finally found some place that offers support, & getting to know others who are battling AA.
I'm looking forward to getting involved.
Again, THANK YOU!
Thank you for welcoming me to Alopecia World. You & rj are truly blessed to have created this website for people with hair loss. After reading a few of the members profiles as well as yours and comments, it brought tears of joy to my eyes to know there are so many others that I can relate to with this hair loss disease. I found your website yesterday and cannot put into words of how I feel about finding this community. All I can really say is that God works in mysterious ways & I am extremely happy to share & hear stories with others about hair loss and not feel embarrassed about it. I woke this morning with a huge smile on my face and felt like it was the beginning of a new world for me. This website has given me more strength & courage to combat the challenges of having AU. Thank you again!!!
Thanks for the walm welcome. I think the post below by nicole puts my feeling into words better than I could. It really is a good feeling to be part of a community that is going through similar experiences. Thanks a lot,
Thanks so much. Things are good for now. Her spots are all pretty hidden. She is handling it all really well right now. However, we will just have to wait and see how she deals when it gets more obvious, which I am pretty sure will happen within the month. Just based on patterns I can see. This would be such a different deal if it weren't for the fact that she is so self concious anyway. Yet, you never know how outside forces are going to shape a kid's life. Some of my worst experiences as a kid helped shape me in ways that I take great pride in today. Hopefully, the same will be true of her.
I wasn't expecting alopeia for Christmas this year! When I think about what else it could be, I feel really fortunate. What a great opportunity for me to get over myself! Thanks so much for this website. I'm sure it's going to be a great help to me as I continue to laugh through life.
Hello Chery,
Thank you very much for the welcoming. i was born and raise in Lagos, Nigeria. i came to America Nov. 2002. I am in my second yar of college, and i hope to study accounting. i was told about alopecia by my Godmother. i am very happy to be apart of this beatiful people.:)))
Hi Cheryl. Thanks for the warm welcome. I think you and RJ have come up with a great site! it is so nice to finally be able to connect with other people who know what it is like to live with alopecia. Thank you for creating this space!! Happy New Year! -Sam
Thanks! I just discovered this web site and I love it. I have had AA since about 1989-90, then it would come and go (as you know) until about four years ago I developed AU. I am now looking for vacuum wigs, a new venture for me. Linda
Hi Cheryl, thanks for the welcome. I'm gald I found this site. I look forward to chatting with you and so many others. hope to chat with you soon. Craig
Hi Cheryl,
May the Lord and His peace be with you always and may His blessing continue showering you. I wanted to thank you for your warm welcome and yes, it is a struggle indeed. I haven't put any pictures of when I had a full head of hair on this page yet, but I will. It is amazing and very intriguing how Alopecia works, how our hair doesn't like us, but our hair does not define who we are. So we have to "keep on keeping on".
Happy New Year Cheryl! It is an honor corresponding with you- thanks for the welcome. Yours is the first beautiful face that I encountered in my internet search for answers. I thought to myself, this sister and her man are such an inspiration to others. You all are really making a difference and I commend you on this site and the other places where you give thoughtful comments and encouragement to Alopecians.
I will take a picture this week to load on the site. I don’t feel pretty, but I’m told by my supportive hubby and others that I look attractive bald. My hair bounced and behaved, it was my identity and joy. I really miss it, but each day I’m doing better with acceptance. I’m a teacher, so I wear a wig to work. Again thanks for having this online forum for us to share and support one another.
God Bless,
Galena
My fiance has "severe" alopecia. She's at work right now, but I knew I had to sign JB up on your weblink. Your info and connection with all of the members is going to help JB get back on track to being healthy and living a more happy and upbeat life again. She has been down lately, but I know she will love connecting with the forum members.
Happy New Year and keep up the great energy to all out there with Alopecia.
Thank you for the warm welcome Cheryl! I think the site is wonderful and the people here have been amazingly warm. Life, for both of us, is a struggle sometimes as Carol is suffering through a series of colds and other complications that often plague her this time of year. We are however, going out tonight to ring in the New Year. Thank You, and Enjoy Yourself!
I just wanted to thank you for making this site, I am meeting some wonderful people, and already it's having such a positive impact on my life. Happy New Year!
Hi Cheryl. Thank you so much for welcoming me to your website or should I say everyone's webesite who has AA. My you and RJ have a blessed holiday and New Year. Thanks again for welcoming me and I look forward to visiting Alopecia World. God Bless you and your family.
Hi Cheryl
Thank you for the welcome message and creating this web site!! I had been looking at it for a while before I created a page, and I am glad that I did! I think this site will help me finally come to terms with my alopecia, and help me start living my life again! Thank you!! Stephanie
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you & RJ both for joining The Prayer Group and more importantly, for creating this site! There is nothing like the power of prayers and the miracles that it may bring.
Thank you so much Cheryl. I can't wait to get on here and look around. Been so busy-just got my tree down yesterday. Thanks again and hope you have a fabulous day. Britt
Happy New Year. I wish you a prosperous and joyous new year.
I would like to invite you and everyone in this community to a wonderful inaugural ball. I am not sure how to do that and if I am allowed to do that. I will admit I am technically challenged. Please let me know if you permit it and if so how do I go about doing it.
Hello, Missy. I was thinking about the site and said, "Wow, if it weren't for that lady and her boyfriend I could still be feeling so lonely." SO, from the bottom of my heart, Thank You a Billion-Gazillion times. May God bless you double for all you guys have done for parents like myself and Alopecians. You totally Rock. Have a wonderful and healthy 2009. Bye for now.
Thank you all for your comments. I have navigated this site as much as I know how so far and think it is a very good thing. My son's name is Austin. I am going to tell him about this site tonight and hopefully he and I can get online so I can show him the treasure that I have stumbled onto. I would love for this to be the start of something great for him. He is a great young man and I love every opportunity to help him feel better about himself and his future with Alopecia. Thanks again guys. Talk to you soon. Roger
Hi Cheryl thanks for the welcome and looking forward to getting to know you My daughter who is 14 now has had alopecia since she was 9 sometimes things get tough because kids can be so mean. This is a wonderful site
Hello Cheryl please let me know when I can talk to you online My husband and I are working on starting a Houston group. I would like to get some of you great help on getting started.
