I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.
Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon
"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..
"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy
I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.
I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."
Thankyou so much for your message!
I am DEFINATELY going to get a copy of your book! It sounds like its exactly what i need :)
I very much appreciate your warm welcome, I look forward to chatting to you more :)

Hi LeslieAnn. Thank you. I am doing well. I was just on your profile page and saw that you have a book on alopecia. I am really looking forward to reading it. I have been AU for about 17 years and I have had alopecia for a total of 24 years. I really can't remember life without it because it started when I was 9. I am going to go on amazon.com right now and order your book.
Hi Leslie, I am doing well and glad to have found this site. How are you doing? I see you wrote a book, hopefully I can get my hands on it and give it a read. It's nice to know people who inspire others. Hopefully I can help my son grow up confident and accepted by his peers.
Hi LeslieAnn: Very nice to hear from you. I am doing well, better every day. Have you ever gone to the NAAF Conference? If so, what are your thoughts. I will definitely buy your book, and can't wait to read it. Thanks for reaching out.
Dear LesleyAnn,
We've had email-contact a few years ago. I asked your permission to publish an image of your artwork 'Bald Boogy' in our Dutch Magazine for alopecia areatapatients of which I'm the head-editor. The name of the magazine is Hoofdzaak. I see your new book 'Keep Dancing' is available now! I would love to announce it in our magazine. Is that allright with you? Kind regards from the Netherlands. Inez.
Hi Leslie Ann!
Thank you so much for sharing your art website with me, I very much enjoyed it. You are very talented.
Thanks also for taking the time to talk with me. I haven't really embraced my alopecia before, and joining this network has really opened my eyes to see how I could be using my hairloss. I am amazed to see how people like you have used their alopecia help others.
Thanks so much for opening yourself up to me and to others. Your kind words go a long way!
Hi Leslie, started to tear up as soon as I got your msg. I am almost 60 yrs. old and have been dealing with trich since I was 10. I am a true believer, but sometimes I feel cursed. Cant even have wholesome relationship with a man because of my insecurity. Its so hard to talk about.
Jill
hi leslie-ann,
thanks for your email. how beautiful you have wrote a book. is it available in dutch? i am very curious about it.
having alopecia is difficult, when i was young they laughed about me and that feeling stays with me..
thank you!!!!
Hi LeslieAnn!
I work for Pink Sneakers Productions and we are currently casting for a new documentary series on TLC, tentatively titled "Life Chronicles." We are looking for individuals with alopecia to share their story and to enlighten our viewers about this disorder and how someone deals with it on a day to day basis. I would love to hear more about your story. I am also really interested to hear about your book, I think that it's an amazing contribution to the alopecia community and it must have been very therapeutic for your healing process! Please email us at casting@pinksneakers.net if you would like to get involved and share your story to enlighten other individuals with alopecia. I hope to talk to you soon!

I am new to this site and am not familiar with your book- I think I need to change that! I look forward to reading it. And a big Congrats on the award!
Hi Leslie ,thanks for you note ..Can I ask you if I can get your book here in Prague or is there any change to order it..I like your pets have a great sunday Joha.......
Hi Leslie -- my son's well inspite of his alopecia universalis although he doesn't care at this time. We found a support group here in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada and we're very glad to have attended their meeting last weekend. Joaquin said he had fun as they had activities for the kids. This is a very great site and thanks for your welcoming comment. I will, for sure, look for your book. It would be a great read while on the GO train. Take care.
I wanted to cry everytime I would think about how beautiful her hair was. I finally realized that hair does not make a person. We are very open about her alopecia and do not try to hide it. We try to educzte as many people as we can. She handles it just GREAT!!! Doesn't want any part of wearing a wig. This might change in MIddle School but everyone is so used to her wearing her bandannas. I struggle with it. I am excited to purchase your book.
hi leslieann,
thank you for your words... and for the welcome
you know, seeing hair falls down it's very hard.
is your book translated in Italian?
thanks
Hiya!
Thank you for the welcome message... i'm doing well thank you. I have to say i love your book If you're hair falls out, keep dancing. It always cheers me up.
Hope you are well too
Melinda
Hi ,Thanks so much! I will look into your book. I would never know you have alopecia looking at your photo. Did you have the areata version before you went universal? All my life I had the little round patches. Then this past year it all came out. Crazy. Of course my family blames my vegetarianism....they just have no clue...and they don't believe me when I tell them it's autoimmune. Isn't that ridiculous. I definately get enough protein. Well, again thanks, Lisa
TY for the warm welcome to Alopecia World! :) I'm glad I'm not the only one who wears their wigs to suit their mood :D
You seem to live a VERY fulfilling life!! I will definitely take a look at your book. I'm an avid reader...both for pleasure, and to do with health, faith, etc. I read a wide variety of things...all the time ;)
I also write poetry (since I was 13 or 14), and used to write short stories as well. I'm also an avid journaler...since about the time I started writing poetry!!
Because my health keeps me housebound & often bed bound, I'm really thinking of taking some online writing courses. All I need to do is figure out who offers what I need.
I still write on paper, but need to get with the program & try my hand at blogging. I'm an IT challenged gal, but this site and others may force me to live in "2009", lol!
Take care, and I'm looking forward to reading your page and blogs in depth!
I'll read it as soon as I get it!
I took Miss O to the mall with me today. She didn't want to wear a hat. Some people looked and didn't comment. One sales girl nudged her coworker....whatever
My sister said milk it and get free stuff...errrrrr....
I just spent 3 hours hauling dirt to my garden..I ache
Hi LeslieAnn, its great to hear from another Portlander!! I'll have to check out your book and the amnw link. Do you off chance know of anything good happening locally for kids w/ AA? Angie

LeslieAnn- How absolutely beautiful you are!! Thanks for the message. Would love to talk to you more regarding your book and your beautiful hair.
:) Angela
Your book looks wonderful. Thank you for writing it. I am looking into "hair" wearing it I mean. You look beautiful. How is it wearing a wig? I am nervous about the heat. I keep hearing wonderful things about lace front, but need to do more research. Right now I am trying to get my mental health in check. This is a difficult thing. I used to feel very comfortable and pretty. Now I don't know who I am and how I feel. Are other woman supportive of you?
Kathleen
Hello, thank you for stopping by my page. I will definitley have to check your book. Being on this site has been wonderful and difficult at the same time, because a lot of the stories are like placing a mirror up to myself. Once again thank you for the kind words & take care.
Hi LeslieAnn,
My son and I are doing well. How are you? Thank you so much for your warm welcome! I'm so happy I found this site. I only wish my son would join. I know in my heart he craves support from outside the family, but I feel he may be too afraid to pursue it. I read your profile and I'm so looking forward to reading your book. I just ordered it and can't wait till it arrives.
Thanks for adding me as yours friend. Sorry it took me so long to answer back it took some courage and time to do it.
I read your book. My daughter bought for me last Christmas.
I cried when I got it.
I guess feeling sorry for myself.
And not having no hair but life goes on.
So I am excepting it.
I just keep ordering new wigs I think I have 13 in all.
But they are so uncomfortable.
I wish I had one of those vacuum ones.
Do you have one?
I can't afford one.
I wish our insurance would cover it I would get one.
Just wanted to say hi will talk to you again soon.
Thanks again for being a friend.
Ronda
Leslie, thank you so much for writing. I am going to buy your book tonight!!! I would love to talk to you. Where are you located? I am in Long island. I am coming out of my grieving process, I bought my first wig yesterday. Until then I was wearing Jessica hairpieces. My question is, I'm cool with donning the wig but, what do you do when you don't have it on. I stop feeling sexy. As I said I'm buying the book. THANK YOU!
I keep hearing of women who have never got there hair back which is freaking me out a little bit since i was expecting my hair to start growing back like yesterday! thank you so much- i will be sure to look for your book.
Hi Leslie Ann, This is wonderful, up untill yesterday I only new a hand full of people with some form of alopecia. Today I have a world full of sisters with the same condition!!!! I'm so happy I've had a little cry!!!
Am going to get a copy of your book the reviews sound great!!!!!!!
May I ask?, in your book do you cover the use of medications. I am on medication with good results, but I haven't met anyone who has done this and Have been questioned at lenght by a couple of women with alopecia why I would try such a thing. I felt more alone then, by them doing that then when stranges have yell out thing to me. - Rachael
Thanks for the info on the Bald Boogie print! I emailed Laura and got an order form. They'll be sending me the print early in July, after the conference. I love your work!
