Hi! My name is Rachel. I love Jesus, my family, and my two dogs. I'm originally from Chicago but am currently a graduate student working on a Ph.D in Microbiology and Immunology in Texas. I hope to do biomedical research in emerging infectious diseases one day. My journey with Alopecia has allowed God to instill in my life a beauty and confidence that I didn't know was there before!
I am 24 years old and was just diagnosed with AA. I am having fun with my little bald head! :)
Hey there Rachel!
I just love your Angry Eye blog! You are so right!
I have lost just a part of my left eyebrow (it keeps coming and going) but I just wanted to say I really admire the way you are handling yourself, I've been dealing with AA/AT for about 10 years and I'm still a mess about it. I have my good days and my bad! Just like everyone I guess. But I wanted to introduce myself and tell ya if you ever need to chat Im here. It really helps to have this site! I unfortunatly just found this site i wish it had been 10years earlier it prob would of made a BIG difference in my acceptance to have people who I could have talked to ya know!
well have a great day

HI Rachel, every body in here understand how you are feeling now. Its hard and confusing. Here you can find many people to talk about, personally talking about this is a good way to understand it better...
So your in Chicago? I'm in the woodridge area about 40 min away from the city. So your meeting with Karen for a vacuum wig she is great so super nice. Good luck with your new hair and make sure you take a look at her web site just amazing work.
Hi Rachel-
Thank you for letting me know about the salon in Arlington Heights! I had not heard about it and will definitely be checking it out. I also have a small head and I know typical wigs won't fit it since most hats don't fit either :)
That's so great I just think she's great. So are you getting a vacuum piece?? I'm planning on looking at some wigs on Wed's I've been losing hair like crazy.
So about getting together well I've tried and everyone has been so back and forth on setting a date but i do know that a few were really excited so lets throw out idea again and see who's in, I'm always up for going out so even if it's a small group I'm in. Where are you staying?
You look great! Thank you for sharing the Salon information! I've been trying to find a place that sells great looking wigs that dont look like wigs. Yours looks great! Does the bobbi brown eyeliner work better than regular liquid eyeliner? Thats what I'm using right now, but I'm not too happy with it. It tends to smear quite a bit.
how are you
what is your new hair called who's it by. wow you have really had great luck picking out hair. hey by the way I asked before but not sure if you saw the message but were you at a Target store in the Downers grove area. iwas there with my kids and I there was a girl who looked just like you in line with me.
well do you think you'll make the Bald Girls Do Lunch in Nov.
jessica
I just love your new bob. It seems like you are really coming to terms with your Alopecia - great for you! Have you made it back to Galveston? Things around here (Pearland) are getting back to normal.
Oh bummer,
I saw that girl like i said and well you have a twin and she must have Alopecia wanted to ask but not sure how. Well I hope things get better for you in Texas and your able to head home soon but I would of love to meet you\
Hi Rachel-
My sister sent me an article that was published awhile ago about a scientist who has alopecia and is studying alopecia. Here is the link to the article: http://discovermagazine.com/2006/feb/when-women-go-bald
I thought you might find it interesting since you are working on a Ph.D in Microbiology and Immunology. Hope you enjoy it! Also, I hope you make in back to Galveston soon and everything is ok with your house. I live in Houston and it slowly starting to return to normal here after Hurricane Ike. Take care!
Sarah
Hi Rachel, Your new wig is beautiful, You have the best smile! You may have AA but you certainly know how to manage it. No problems there. Regards, Jamie
Rachel, if you read this before you go to the salon tomorrow, will you ask your stylist the name of your bob wig? I don't need a wig for daily wear, but I am thinking of one for special occasions as my hair is getting REALLY thin. That is exactly how my hair is cut so I think it might work. THANKS!!
Hi Rachel. Love your pics. If you don't mind me asking where did you get your hairpiece in picture "bob 6. It is similar to how I wore my hair before it started coming out. Thanks!!!!
Our situations are very similar. I have asthma, allergies (extreme food allergies on top of the normal stuff), eczema, and my mother has Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, a rare form of hypothyroidism. I had mono when I was 16, turning 17. I developed alopecia two months after I turned 18. I had two relapses within that year.
Also, I've found out... that it's normal to get mono twice if you were young the first time and it didn't hit very hard. I'd never heard of that before. Interesting.
... by the way, I wish I had the self-confidence to just sport my bald head around!! I am so amazed by people who can just DO that.... I have a ways to go before I reach that level of comfort and confidence.
You have a nice tattoo in your head :) I've been thinking tattoo in head too. When i shave my all hair off, my little bald spots can see very clearly.
That's why i've been thinking tattoo. Do you have any idea about a tattoo, what would look very very very short hair? about 0,01mm. long? :D I'm sorry about my bad english, but i wish you understand what i'm telling for :D
thanks so much, this is my new wig Audrey. In Oct my hair started to fall out again and i've lost so much on the back of my head i don't have to much left. I have a lot on the top kind of funny.
how have you been??
Thanks her name is ginger that was her very first bath the day we got her. "wow" you look alot like my dentist she's a hottie too. I know there's more than one resone for hair loss but I think she has AA we never bring it up. I kind of want to say something but I don't know what to say. What would you do ?
Hello Rachel, do you have days when you just want to cry? It has been a year and it does not look like my hair is going to come back, and I am starting to come to grips with it. I am not as young as you and it is a lot harder when you are older.
hi there
i am SHAILEN from INDIA persuing PhD in biochemistry. as i can see from your profile that we have similar streams and research inclinations. lets share our research and alopecia experiences........
it is apparent madam that you rock. seriously. i think if i'd look that good clean shaven, i'd go balls out today. do tell... is that a real tat on your lovely head in the profile picture?
Just stumbled across your profile!! Saw you are doing your Ph.D in Micro and Immunology... I work as a Microbiology Lab Technologist up here in a Hospital!! I love Microbiology.. so interesting!
Hope you had a good weekend!! talk to you soon!
ps. you have some nice eyebrows!! I still have both of mine, but looking at yours makes me want to shave mine off and pencil them in to look like that!! lol They are really nice!
Rachel,
Are any of these wigs prosthetic freedomwigs...vacume wigs?
Oh for what ever it's worth...you look great in every one of them.
They all have a great style."WOW"
Although I can't wear any wigs natural or synthetic..on that woven messy stuff!
Just get wheezing asthma, eczema and allergy attacks.
I do have a new prosthetic wig...yet must shave every day since some hair grew back. That causes razor burn and too much irritation.
Plus the heat is too much for a vacume wig....it slides off...cause there is a flood happening under there.
I guess it works better in winter and when I'm in the air con.
Either way...I'm Cool walking without my hair...."COOL & COOL"
Casey
