About Me:
I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.

It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).

Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).

On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.

I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.

In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.

Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.

Welcome to our world AlopeciaWorld.com!

Hi there and thank you Cheryl......
I'm not really sure of my way around here yet or what the hell i'm doing.
I was only told a few days ago about my problemfrom my biopsy results.... everyone seems to be quit cheery on here.
Is it just me being negative..... But i'm feeling rather depressed about it all. I cant quite take it in. I dont want to believe it. I keep going from being low and crying then depressed and numb followed by a strange kind of calm then back to my bubbly self.....then the return to the low...
It actually frightens me to come on to this site, think its because It kinda makes it all too real to me.
Why is it everyone seems to be ok....have they all known a long time and had time to get used to it....How do you get used to this.
I'm usually a possitive person ...but this has screwed me!!.......

Sorry if i'm coming across as a right moaner. I'm just shell shocked at the moment.....

Hi! I'm glad to have found this site. I was hoping to find a support group for my granddaughter so she can know there are other little girls going through the same thing. Do you know of anything in the Charlotte area?
  • Renee J.

Hi Cheryl, had a beautiful time in Montreal. Just had an overnight stay though, as I was on a weeklong road trip with my girlfriend and Montreal was the last leg of it. Hope to pass that way again, and next time we'll have the opportunity to meet. Take care.

Hello! Thanks for the warm welcome. I think it's a great thing that's going on here- now we can all talk to each other about our experiences with alopecia and know that we'll find someone who relates. I don't have any friends with the condition, so it was hard for me to find anyone to talk to about my feelings. Then I came across your site, and I no longer felt so alone. Thank you so much.

I wasn't able to go to the conference this year either. My younger siblings were still in school since they moved the conference up a week. I also hope to go next year. My parents have been pretty well. Life's been pretty hectic lately with starting college and being away from home but it's all good. =)

the baby is very sweet. I am going down later in the month for a week to see if I can be helpful. that will be interesting. Ian goes back to work next week so Maya will be on her own for the first time. Denis is loving being a grandpa. Kind of a neat thing. He never had a grandfather and his father was never a grandfather. so this is a big thing for him.

HEY! Thanks for the warm welcome! I don't really know anyone who knows about alopecia and I have had it since I was ten. I am so glad to have found this site. I saw another specialist today, and about to start another treatment. I guess we will see how this goes!
    Thanks again!
  • JeffreySF

    Hi Cheryl,

    Nunzio is a real treat.
I will try and get him to actually get online here. I always tell everyone I meet about AW to get the strength and support I have achieved.

I am here for all of us now and forever!!!

    Hi Cheryl,
When I started lossing my hair 10 months ago I did not know anything about wigs so I went to Continetal hair. I didn't have much time to shop around so I just went online and look for the place that look the best as far as wigs and started my long journey. Now that I look back I can't believe I did that. Although I have no regreats and I love the wig I do know now by this site that I have more options.
On another note we did get to see the Niagra falls on our way back so that was neat!
  • JET

Hello; I just wanted to stop by and say Hello. Have a wonderful week. God bless you.

    Hi Cheryl,

I haven't visited the site in quite some time until tonight -- which means I am becoming more and more comfortable. I was thinking though how greatful I am to have stumbled upon this two years ago while feverishly searching the internet for something...anything...about alopecia.

I want to thank you for creating and keeping up this site. The membership seems to be growing more and more everytime I check in. It's fantastic and is the number one reason for my sanity today -- for real. Kudos and keep up the great work!

    Cheryl,
I would like to be your friend and join in on the the bald day. I too have alopecia. I have had it sense I was 33years old, my hair came back one time for a bout four months then it left again taking all the hair on my body. a few years ago my eyebrows came back. I have gone in circles about this. One year I was with my husband we were in New York, I took off that hot wig. Later I put it back on. This pass summer we were in Jamacia , I didn't wear it at all there, it was so hot, and I was free. I learn that hair is not what makes me, it is what's in the inside of my heart .
  • JeffreySF

    Hi Cheryl,

I'm actually moving on the 27th but it's quite the process of packing everything one has incurred over time. The next week or two will be a bit of an adjustment but I'm hoping to be back to normal soon. Hope all is going well on your end! :)
