Wow.... Been married 22 years to the most awesome guy. We adopted a little girl from China February 08 so I am pretty blessed I would say!! My happiness was short lived because in April 2008 while I was supposed to be enjoying my new daughter I discovered a bald spot at the base of my neck. I was diagnose with Alopecia Areata. My world came crumbling down. I spent the year off with my daughter obsessing about getting the perfect wig before I went back to work in January 2009.
I didn't lose my hair all at once. I did shots for a year and then decided enough was enough. In september 2011 I shaved it all off what little was left.
It has been four years I have been living with Alopecia. There are good days and bad days but in the end I have discovered it is just hair.....
Don't think I will ever be comfortable going around bald in public but around home it is the norm. My hubby and beautiful daughter love me just the same..
LOL - Big Hair! When you have thin hair almost anything seems big in comparison - at least that's what I tell myself whenever I start to think that my wigs are too full. Whenever I get a new wig I always dislike it at first, then I'll take it off & put it away for a few weeks, then get it out & try it on again. I go through this process off & on for weeks until I finally get used to it & decide that I like it. I have two right now that I'm not wearing - trying to decide whether I'll get used to them or should return them.
Comfy Grip is a gel filled band that you put around your head to keep your wig from slipping, it closes with velcro. Mine was too big for my "peanut head" and it didn't keep my wig on like the ad promised. I was out $35 and stuck with a product that didn't work for me, the way I shop for wigs, that was 3 wigs...easily ;-)
Lori, try hairsisters.com, they take a while to ship your order, but they are very reasonable. I've seen the same wigs I've paid under $20 bucks for in high end wig shops for $150. Try the short, tri-colored half wigs, like a pixie cut, I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead in one of those. The half wigs fit my "peanut" the best and you can find short half wigs too! Before I found this site I didn't know I had a problem, lol!
Hi Lori, I'm sure the little one is up from her nap by now, sorry it took so long, I had a persistant client who wanted to tell me her life story. Being the soft hearted person I am, I listened, lol, okay she had a juicy story! Hairsisters.com is just one of many that sell decent wigs, synthetic wigs are not made to be worn forever and if we had hair we'd spend money at the hair salon and on hair dye, etc. The wigs pay for themselves, most last for about 4 months with constant wear and about 6-12 months worn intermittently. My hair fell out in the same pattern yours did, then my dermatologist burned my scalp in the back by applying salycidic acid
The acid burned a scab over the spot, the doctor said it would stimulate hair growth, it didn't, it hurt, oozed and bled. When it healed the scab was gone and there were no scars. No hair either, my new doctor told me the old one had damaged my skin and hair would never grow there again. So I have no thoughts that hair will ever grow in the back.
Hi lori,
did you make those cakes? they are amazing! anyway this week has been tough, the change is obvious and people are noticing but i'm surviving. I haven't put any pics up yet but I soon as I get some new pics i will post them up.
Hallo Lori M,
it are very beautiful things that the do you do.Certainly also very good.Admire your cleverness.Congratulate! My mummy and wife also bake beautiful and good sweets.Finest, but does my daughter.Beautiful greeting from Czech republic. as
Hum!! I think Little Red Corvette was one, Gett Off, Kiss, Cream and the Diamond and Pearls album :) You know, all the songs HE won't sign anymore!! :)
I'm also LOVING Pink's new song So What!! That one I played too.
Still feel GREAT about my decision!! Maybe it's because I'M back in control and it's not controlling me any longer!!
UGGG!! My dear husband just walked in and IS HUNGRY!!! So, better go for now.
Hi Lori 22months is the best age right up until three at three they get a little too adventurous lol
This alopecia thing is kinda new to me, I started loosing hair in Aug and it's now all gone. So i went to a wig shop and bought the first one i tried on walked out of the store with it on The lady working there must have thought I was a nut hehe
I guess I'm the kind of person that doesn't hesitate
My wig is a tressallure called "Aimee"
I don't even know the color
It's really nice to meet and make new friends on this site
take care
I have an idea!! Grab one of your beautiful cakes, a BIG 'Ol glass of wine, and park it in front of the TV for the rest of the evening!! ALWAYS have a Plan B!!
I love your cakes... you are VERY talented and are now inspiring me to have a go. Not that I should be eating cakes mind you.
Regarding the wigs, yes it is hard to find one that is not BIG. The more hair I have lost, the thinner the hair I have left has become (the actual strands) so any wig I put on looks quite strange I find. I don't actually feel I look like myself. Have you thought about a custom wig that is made to fit you and has less hair density? That might be what you are looking for and you can get custom colours (highlights and lowlights) added in.
On a completely unrelated to hairloss note, have you seen this site... I was thinking about your cakes and I just remembered it http://www.realbakingwithrose.com/ she does all sorts of baking/writes cookery books and stuff... but also features cakes and cake decorating. I find it very interesting to read.
How are things with you? I hope you and your family are well.
The wig is a full lace wig which means it is bonded (with adhesive tape) all around the edge and can be left on for a while... I leave it for about 6 days before removing and washing my scraggles (bio-hair) and sorting the wig out. I have worn it quite a bit, but am taking a break for a few days. I like myself without my wig and I am at a stage where I just do random things like wear it, not wear it and wear scarf, don't wear anything... I have no routine... I can't decide if I like it enough for it to become a permanent fixture that I make more effort to wear consistently!
LOL! No you appear like you actually have a life (especially with your cutie pie daughter)... unlike me ;o) who has way too much time on her hands sometimes... I am still baking. Plotting and planning... I have my mum's 65th coming up in March and am thinking of attempting rather large cake for her. xx
Thanks for the welcome, Lori. Your daughter is gorgeous, your cakes are AMAZING! and yes, I look forward to having a "good hair day" when I finally get a wig ;)
Debbi Fuller is coming on September 15th to hold an information evening in Ottawa about the vacuum wigs from New Zealand. I plan to be there, and it would be wonderful to meet you! I've had Alopecia for over ten years now - sometimes AA, sometimes AT, and often AU. It did grow back a couple of times - once dark, and once as white as snow, but it all fell out again. Currently I have no hair at all, except for scanty eyebrows and eyelashes. I've been buying wigs off the internet but I'd love to get a really good one, since synthetic ones are fine until a) it rains, b) it's windy or c) it's hot like it was here last week!
Anyway, just in case you are interested, let me know. It's being held at the Embassy Suites hotel downtown in the evening of Sept 15th.
I work full time too - and the next couple of weeks are going to be insanely busy, but I'd love to get together in early October one evening. It was so nice to meet you, and honestly - if I'd met you anywhere else, I would never in a million years have thought that was a wig! It looks great on you and I can see why you are a little worried that the Freedom wig wouldn't turn out that good!
Hi Lori,
I couldn't help noticing your discussion about Debbie Fuller's visit to Ottawa. I too went to see her that night. I think I met Julia as she was coming and I was going. I'd love to know your impression and whether you've decided to take the plunge. I have shoulder length hair and am still covering as best I can. I'm really afraid of the whole shaving it off thing and finding out I made a mistake. Do you still have some of your own hair? Your hair looks great on your bio photo, by the way. I'm finding it really difficult to know when the right time is to take that next step.
Okay - you dragged it out of me! I felt so guilty about buying it when I got home after ordering a $3,000 wig (greedy little greedy!) that I went into guilty hiding mode.....and didn't tell hubby I'd bought it. I stashed it away, but tried it on while I was in the guilt mode. I honestly think it's a bit 'young' for Nanny! Anyway I came clean last night, so maybe a clear conscience might change my view of it! I certainly hope so. I can be a real twit at times......................... LOL
Hi Lori,
Your loss sounds a lot like mine - I have the ophiasis pattern, but patches on the rest of my head come and go. Because my hair is shoulder length, I can (sort of) hide the bottom and around the ears. I use headbands sometimes, but it concerns me that the ophasis pattern has not grown back in a year. I figure it's pretty long-term and the outlook isn't great. I go for the injections too, but I don't seem to get much regrowth. After the first 7 months, I got quite ill with a virus and shockingly EVERYTHING grew back! Only to fall out again 4 months later - talk about disappointing. I think that made me realize this was not just a one time event (although I have heard of people who suffered a one time event) and that this was going to be chronic! My time to shave is going to depend on how the winter goes. We're located near Arnprior. Check out our website www.ballintotasalpacas.com - there's a map on our contact page. The family picture was taken in October - my hair was in the process of falling out for the second time. It's really coincidental that I found you and Julia online - I've never joined anything before and I quite stumbled on this by accident. Glad I did! S.
I'm sooooo excited - I have the lock of hair to be used, and my Freedom cap.......now I just have to wait, and that is the hardest part! I'm getting to really LOATHE my roadkills! LOL
If your hair is falling out a lot, maybe the time is right to go for it!!! I'll let you know when mine arrives, and we'll have to get together so you can see it/try it on etc. That might just make you decide!
Hey Lori Hope that you are feeling better too, I'm sorry, it was like I had to vent too because I was feeling the same way. Are you going to get treatments still? I'm currently getting treatments but it doesn't seem to be working this time. Very frustrating. Take care and keep me posted on you progress. I hope it stops for you too! Melissa
Lori, Thanks for the reply! I know how you feel! That's the same place that I'm at too. I am the same way, I wont shave it and don't even want to think about it. I don't know what's wrong with me. I guess I can't let go!! I worry all the time if there is a spot showing or the wind blowing on it or whatever! It is just too hard and takes too much energy. I'm so tired of it all! Well, I wish you well Lori. I heard that the Freedom Wigs are awesome but you have to shave your head. There is another one called Joseph Paris Wigs and Cindy on AW wears them. She loves hers and I think it looked great. Thinking of looking into one but I'm just going day by day now, hoping that the shedding will stop. PLEASE!! My doctor's nurse says that it is normal for people to loose 400 hairs in a day, I don't believe that. I think it's more like 50-100. That's what every website in the world says about that too, so I don't know why they told me that. Keep the faith Lori and really hope you get to a place where you are ok with it all too. I know this isn't the end of my life, but just something we need to adjust to. I'm still a wife, mom, sister, the same person that I have always been. I know that never changes. So are you! I'm sure your daughter loves you to death! She looks so sweet! I have two girls myself and I couldn't image life without them. They are WAY more important! Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing, take care! Melissa
Hey there - so are you wearing wigs now? How much hair do you have? I am so affraid to resort to a wig. I am still able to hide the spots, however, so much has fallen out lately. I hate this. How are your lashes and brows?
Hey there. Sorry to hear about the eyebrows. I hear there are many really cool options for eyebrows that look real. I hope you can find something like that. I may end up in a wig soon. It's getting thinner and thinner, but I will keep plugging away with the olux foam, injections and the Rogaine. I haven't had a problem with it growing back in, just wants to fall out. Hope all is well with you, take care.
How are you? and your little one? Last week we celebrate the 8th and 6the anniversary of my dauthers: both were born on the same day.....I had nothing to do with it ;-) I've bought a wig recently because I re-started to work again... did not miss the fake haire but on the other hand, I felt it is easier than trying to match a scarf and an outfit!
Hi Lori :) Thanks for the nice comments on my photos. I am just starting to get used to wearing the freedom wig and I almost feel like myself from "those days" again! I was afraid that wearing a wig would take me farther away from being comfortable with myself as I am, but I think it is actually doing the opposite! Your little girl is the sweetest by the way! :)
Hi Lori. I was reading one of your blogs about your hair piece and wanted to know if you ever did end up at Continental. After buying a human hair wig from online and then having a hairdresser cut/color it, I've decided no more of this $%#@ stuff! After $650, I look like Garth from Wayne's world. I won't even wear it. So, I wanted to know what you thought of Continental because I'm in the process of getting my passport so I can get up there!
I actually just finally got my passport so I'm ready to go! I'm very worried because I'm afraid to spend a lot of $$ and not like it! Do they guarantee at all? Why didn't you go back with it and tell them you didn't like it? That's hard to do though, the human hair wig I bought online and brought to a wig stylist...she ruined and I can't even wear it...it's that bad...and I never went back. It's hard because she was super excited about the job she did and it was horrible!
Oh and by the way, I read your post about eyebrows and I'm in the same boat. My right eyebrow is almost gone and the left one is starting to thin. I bought the temp tattoo ones and they look horrible, especially if you still have some hairs left there. They're cheap enough, but didn't work out for me anyway.
So, I'm penciling. And that isn't working that great either since one swipe and poof, gone. I realize now, we unconsciously wipe our faces!
I think anything you glue on too would still need you to have none left. Ugh IDK.
Hi Lori,
Just checking in since we live so close to each other. I've been reading a few of your posts and I've read about the eyebrows. I can relate. I've lost almost all of one eyebrow and the eyelashes on one eye. (On opposite eyes if you can believe that!) I shave my head now and I'm waiting (6 months!) on my Freedom Wig. I kinda wish it would all just go if it's going. I actually don't have hair on my arms and legs now. What do you call this? AA? AT? AU? I have a strong feeling that all of the eyebrows and eyelashes will go soon. There's been no regrowth now in 8 months. Hope things are okay with you. Shannon
thanks.... im liking the tatt too. I wanted something as a reminder that hair was not all that I was about and something that looks cool when i look at my head. LOL
I hope everything is good with you
