About Me:
I'm a 53 year old divorced mother of 3 grown kids, and 4 grandkids. Im very down to earth, easy to get along with, and very easy to talk to, I'm a little shy around people until I get to know them.

I believe I've had alopecia since my early twenties. A co-worker (a guy) use to always tell me "you have a bald spot in the back" and I would always just blow him off because he teased me all the time and because back then (early 80's) I use to roller set my hair and I just thought that I didn't comb out my parts. It wasn't until I decided to get all my hair cut short so I could wear a leisure curl that I noticed the bald spots. Not long after that, I started noticing small pimples and my head would itch. Upon scratching, I would scratch the head off the pimples which would turn into a sores, once again I would scratch and the scalbs would come off along with the hair follicle.

I started going to the dermatologist on base and they prescribed some tar shampoo that made my hair come out by the handful. Then I started the shots in my scalp which were painfull and expensive. I then tried Rogain and that only grew hairs on my face!! So then I tried hair vitamins and that only made my existing hair longer. Then I tried the laser comb treatment and that didn't work either plus this too was expensive. So for about 10 yrs I just kept taking the hair vitamins and used my remaining growing hair to cover up my bald spots but this limited me as far as hair styles and I was afraid to be in any type of wind or let my car windows down. It also interferred with me dating because I was afraid the guys would notice and ask questions. Finally in 2005 I went to a hair restoration company and purchased a hair system (after contemplating for about 5 yrs). It worked for me but was just too expensive and I had to keep signing yearly contracts. Most of the pictures you see is that hair system. This May 2010, I decided to try to lace front wig which is what you see now, which saved me about $1300 a year but I'm not happy with it either. Now I'm looking into something else, so i'm looking and listening to everyone's comments. I'm investigating the vacuum suction wigs, the freedom wigs, and now the grippers. I just want something that's secure, looks natural and won't send me to the poor house.

I still have problems dating because the guys always ask questions like "is that your real hair" and why do women feel they need to wear extentions and so on.... and I just don't like trying to explain it especially if they are not someone who is going to stick around and be in a committed relationship. I'm just tired of people judging me which is why I'm so glad that I found this site, it feels good to know there are others like me going thru some of the same problems and having some of the same issues.

Thanks for creating this site and thanks to everyone that I've had the pleasure of communicating with so far....

Shaving

Posted on June 5, 2011 at 11:42pm 2 Comments

I wear a vacuum and and i have to shave my head every day. Any suggestions to prolong my shaving? I hate having to shave every single day but my wig will not suction if i don't. I actually have stubble by midday after a morning shave..

Also all this hair is hot here in Florida so I'm looking for suggestions for a shorter wig that actually fits snug. I have a couple of short wigs but by not having any hair on my head they don't fit snug enough. Any suggestions on both matters would be… Continue

You have done more than me. My mom, sister and I showed my son one time 5 or so years ago. To date I have never shown my husband or anyone else. I have a couple of friends who know but have never seen my bald head. I have always worn something on my head even in the house. My husband knows but has never seen. He compliments me on my looks all the time before I lost all my hair and still to date. He is very supportive when it comes to my alopecia and so is my sister and mom. It is very nice speaking to you KIT. I'm in Illinois and it has been in the 30's, 40's and 50's lately in regards to temperature. I am jealous of your weather. Is the freedom wig like a lace wig or what?

Hello Linda, I read your story and it was interesting. I have had alopecia on and off my entire adulthood and it started at age 12. I have dated, been engaged and married. I was so lucky about how I felt about it. It has gotten to me at times when I was younger and then when I lost all of my hair at age 37 approx after a surgery and I have worn wigs, and full lace wigs since. I just think my different looks at being a woman with the versitility of change. I try to stay positive and I want to look on the outside as good as I feel in the inside. I think you should date, you are an attractive woman and I really don't think there would be a problem attracting men. I would love to hear more about your freedom wig. Drop me a note when you have time. Bye for now.

You are such a beautiful lady. I can related. I tried the "system" and just did not want to keep paying the huge monthly fees. . .still did not like the glue they put on your head--and they had the shave some of the hair I had.

I had beautiful hair growing up, but still had the balding at the temples. I figured it was hereditary and prayed prayed prayed that the hair would grow. It seemed like a cruel joke that God would play on us. So now, I wear wigs--yes, sometimes I want to throw it across the room, but I like the fact that I can take it off when I get home and rub my scalp or wash the hair that I have. God bless you for being so courageous.

As far as dating, I'm sure you tell some stories. When the right man comes along, you will know when it is safe to share this information. We live in a superficial society that still thinks that hair/long hair is the only beauty symbol out there. Hang in there and thank you.
