I'm sixteen years old. I've had alopecia since i was in 4th grade.
My life has been affected greatly by this. I don't need a wig. I have a lot of hair but my bald spots are still quite visible. I'm insecure as it is and this just adds to it. Currently i have 5 quarter sized bald spots all over my head and some spots thinning. My sister also has Alopecia areata and i'm scared for the both of us. She's 11. No one that i know of has this. No one for me to talk to about this. Talk to me?
Hi Marisa, Alopecians in Michigan will celebrate International Alopecia Day (August 6th, 2011) with a late lunch at T.G.I Fridays in Livonia. We will be meeting at 3 PM.

no my wig doesn't fall off...
most of my wigs have this tightening system : http://www.mytresses.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/july%2011%20022.jpg so i just pull those tabs on each side and slide them into a notch on the wig itself to tighten it pretty tight...
however, it prob. would come off if someone pulled it.. but on a day to day basis.. it stays on, even in gym class =)
you can also use tape on some wigs so you'd be able to tape it still.
i actually do straighten most of my wigs... even my sythetic ones =)
you can straighten it with a flat iron or even a curling iron... i use a flat iron though, it's a lot easier!! it doesn't ruin it when i do it... just make sure you fully wet the hair and put the flat iron on the lowest setting possible then you can inch up the heat until the fibers fully straighten... (it will sizzle against the flat iron but don't get nervous!! it only sizzles because of the water that is coating the hair.. that's why you want the hair to be wet so it'll protect the fiber from direct heat!!
two tips:
when starting to straighten a wig that you've never straightened before.... make sure to test how the hair will react to the heat by using a piece of hair toward the back of the wig!!! somewhere where, just incase if you burn it, no one will see it!! that's really important cause you don't want to burn an obvious piece of hair... AND
you must use a ceramic straighter that has adjustable heat settings.. preferably one that goes as low as 5 but it doesn't have to =)
When I had some hair and a bald spot on top of my head, I used to wear "falls."
You can still get them, but they are not called falls anymore. You attach them under your hair in the front, and they go over the top of your head and blend in with the rest of your hair.
Hi Marisa,
Have you tried hair extensions? They cover up the bald spots.
There's a lot of info in my book, you might want to read it. It's written just for women and girls. It's called "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!' If you want to find out more, you can go to my page and get more information. I'd like to help! LeslieAnn

Here's a human hair fall with a band attached. Looks good!
