About Me:
I have alopecia. I started loosing my hair when I was 13. By the time I was 21 I had to wear a wig. I at least made it through school and a wedding. I have been married for 18 years and my husband loves the fact that there is never hair on the floor and that I don't spend hours doing my hair yet I still look beautiful. I love him for that. If given the choice to have my hair grow back.... I think I feel confident and comfortable and beautiful the way I am. I look great with minimal effort. Yippeee! I have had to look to the positive side of my condition. I am much happier now.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia totalis
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

Hi Nikki, sorry I am just getting back to you. I have not been on the site in a long time. But I would love to answer any questions you have or had lol. Looking forward to hearing back from you!

p.s Nikki the temporary tattoo lasts 1 to 2 years, depending on the person. They say alopecians tend to need touch up sooner. (typically for non-alopecians I think they said 3 years). My eyeliner is lasting a long time. At least 3 years now.

Hi Nikki! (Sorry didn't see you message earlier!)

I went to Longtime Liner for my temporary eyebrow tattoos. (Google 'longtime liner vancouver' and you'll find their website and info. Call them for price if not listed - they are very nice).

They persuaded me to go with the student pricing (as in, done by a tattooist in training!) It was as I recall 50% the regular price, and quite well done. It was a while ago and I also did eyeliner at the same time, so I can't quite remember the price .. $500 sounds about right.

I went back for a touchup once, but haven't gone back in two years. My eyebrows are growing in a bit and I noticed that one side didn't quite line up with the tattoo, so I'm waiting for the eyebrows to grow in fully, and the tattoo to fade. For now, just eyebrow pencil!

Hi Nikki
Great to "meet" you.
I have been living with alopecia since I was eight now almost 36. It has been a journey that until recently (September) that I have finally comes to terms with (almost LOL) I find it therapeutic knowing that I can talk with others during their journey and maybe help others.

Hi Nikki,

It's been so long since I logged on again! I wish I'd seen your message earlier. Did you ever get around to coming to Victoria? We do occasionally make it over to Vancouver, so hopefully we will be able to actually meet each other. Graeme and I homeschool our two oldest, and I'd love to bring them to the bodyworks exhibit at Science World before it ends, so perhaps this might be in the near future!

You had ased how Nnea copes with her alopecia. She copes with it, probably better than I do. It's not very often that I see her overly self conscious about it, but I do catch her sometimes looking longingly at other little girls her age with long hair. Last year, she had been acting out a bit, trying to be "a boy", and one day I sat down with her and asked her why she was doing it. She said it was because she thought she had to, since she didn't have hair. So, finding her identity has been a bit of a challenge at times. I assured her that she's allowed to like dresses and dollies and princesses, just as much as any other girl, and this year has been the first year she's chosen to wear dresses. She does have a wig, but finds it itchy, so doesn't opt to wear it often. In the morning, I'll ask her "So, Lynnea, do you want to wear your hat, your head or your wig today?" and she'll usually choose the first or second option.

She really is a stunningly beautiful little girl. I adore her, and constantly pray that she is happy, and healthy and that she experiences all of childhood's little joys.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and all the best in 2011!

Hi Nikki,

It's nice to know another west coaster on here! It's been a long time since I've logged in, so I apologize if you've been waiting long for a response. We live over on Vancouver Island, with our three beautiful girls. Lynnea, our 'middlest' daughter, as we say, has alopecia areata, although it usually behaves like totalis. She's 5 and is just beginning to understand how unpredictable alopecia is. She is still waiting for her real hair. That's the hard part for me. She is so patient, and has full faith that it will grow someday, but I try to remind her that it might, or it might not, and that's just fine. She's so pretty!

I hope we have a chance to meet outside of the internet, seeing as we're so close. It would be good for Lynnea. Hope to get to know you better. :)
