My hair is falling out. I am trying to wrap my brain around that. I, who have always had thick beautiful hair, may actually go bald. It's terrifying. My hair is my best physical feature. I really don't know if my already low self esteem can handle this.

So next weekend I'm going hat shopping. I always hated myself in hats. I'm looking for a baseball cap. Wind is not my friend. I need a cap to wear on weekends, to picnics and anything outside. I'm also going to try on other kinds of hats. See what styles I may like if I suddenly find I need to cover up everyday. I know that if I try things on when I don't actually need them it wont be as terrible as shopping when I do need them. This way I'll know what I like and if the need arises I will already be prepared.

THIS SUCKS! Damn immune system leave my hair alone!

Ok first of all, your hair is not your best feature. Your best features come from within. :o) I know how you feel, darlin. I always loved my hair, too. But you will come to find that your hair and your appearance do not in any way define who you are. Like you, I always hated hats. I ended up preferring to wear bandanas to wearing my wig or a hat. Here's a link to one of my bandana pics...if the link doesn't work, just go to my page and look at my photos. Click here. Believe me, I know how scary it is to lose your hair as a woman. But please trust me that everything will be ok if you let it. Words of my cousin: Hold that head high and be proud of what you got even if it ain't a lot. :o)

Hugs,
Mandy

i agree with mandy: your best features come from within. focus on embracing that inner beauty you have inside of you (as cliche as that sounds) - you are a beautiful person inside and out, hair or no hair. yes, hats and bandanas and such are a scary adjustment, but remember that you have a great support group here at Alopecia World. don't be afraid to step out into the world, even if you don't look the same anymore, because the person you are on the inside will always be the same, beautiful expression of your self. have a beautiful day =)

It is absolutely true that your best features are within, and I know that can be so hard to hear because I felt THE SAME EXACT way you did when I was first going through all of this a year ago. My hair was EVERYTHING to me. But let me tell you that you are going to learn so much about yourself and life. God does not put you through anything he thinks you can't handle. You are a strong woman (we all are strong people here) and you are going to get through this and become even stronger and greater than you already are. It's just important to keep things in perspective and know that there are good ways to slowly start feeling more comfortable in your road to self acceptance. Hats are good, yes, and you'll start exploring other options too like bandanas, hair peices, wigs, and all that good stuff. It's all and adjustment like Traci said, but you will get through this and we are all here to help!! =)
