Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a relatively new psychology method to help people deal with issues in their lives. I encourage those who are having a hard time coping with their hairloss to research this method of therapy. "Get Out Of Your Mind And Into Your Life" and "The Happiness Trap" are two of a few books on this topic and there is plenty of information online about it. Psychologically speaking I've never found doctors very helpful in aiding their patients cope but this method is similar to how a few of us have helped ourselves. If this is something you are interested in, wikipedia has some information on it and it doesn't hurt to do an online search about ACT either. I've added the link to wikipedia for you to start you off. This could be a very useful tool for support group leaders as well. I've downloaded the first book I mentioned and plan on reading very soon but I wanted to share this because it looks like something worthy of our attention in helping others cope with not just alopecia but negativity and stresses in our lives. Happy reading!! :)

Thanks for posting, Carol! As you say, I'm having a difficult time coping and need any help I can get. The two books you listed are available at my local library, so I'll be checking them out soon. :)

Thanks again! :)

I just finished reading "Get out of your mind and into your life" and I found it to be a good way to work through any problems but especially alopecia. I just hope that with a loaner from the library you will have enough time to work through the book (photocopy the exercises at least to do on your own after). Stick with it though and be honest with yourself, let me know how it goes! :)
