Hey guys, just a brief question. What have been your experiences as an alopecian at work? Has it prevented you from getting a job? Have things become weird at work because of your alopecia? Any advice or tips on what wigs look (and feel) comfortable and natural?
I'm new to the work force and am curious what I might be facing!
Thanks!
Alexandra

P.S. - If it makes any difference, my field will be marketing related.

My view on this is that you shouldn't let on until you're hired. I'm not asking you to lie, just keep in "under your hat"(no pun)intended) until it becomes, either comfortable for you to tell your employer and co-workers, or it becomes a necessity.

But first, secure the position. At least you'll have labor laws behind you if they DO have problems with it.

I think this is a personal decision, one you need to think about. If you choose to wear hair, and based on your comfort level with your alopecia, then you have the option of telling co-workers or not. I personally don't believe that my medical conditions are anyones buisness, including those individuals I work with. When I first lost my hair I happened to work with a bunch of really wonderful people who were very supportive, and who actually helped me through the worst of it ( I am an RN). However, I have since moved on to a better position at a totally different facility. At my current place of employment I have not felt the need to disclose my hair loss. However, if any of my co-workers asked me, I would be honest and tell them. As far as comfortable wigs...............My first ones were the standard type, but for the past 4 years I have worn vacuum wigs. I feel that these are the most comfortable, most natural looking, and confidence enhancing wigs one can wear. Good luck, I hope this helps a bit!!!!
