Hey all,

I got an email from the NAAF which had some interesting news I wanted to share with you!
Here is what it said:

Lionel -

Because of your commitment to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, we wanted to alert you to the most exciting news about NAAF funded genetics research to date!

On Thursday, July 1, 2010 this research will be published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. Various media outlets will begin covering the content of this article highlighting the work of geneticist and National Alopecia Areata Foundation Scientific Advisory Council member, Dr. Angela Christiano, who has received NAAF grants for the past twelve years.

Led by Dr. Angela Christiano, and using cases from the National Alopecia Areata Registry, a team of investigators from Columbia University Medical Center have found eight genes that contribute to alopecia areata, one of which has a possible role in the onset of the disease. Read More>>>>

She has uncovered eight genes that underpin alopecia areata. Since many of the genes are also implicated in other autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes – and treatments have already been developed that target these genes – this discovery may soon lead to new treatments for the 5.3 million Americans suffering from hair loss caused by alopecia areata.

Dr. Christiano, who has alopecia areata herself, just presented her work to 700 people at our 25th NAAF Conference in Indianapolis this past Saturday. She received a standing ovation and was overwhelmed by the response of the attendees. We have NEVER had a medical talk get a standing ovation.

We are more than excited. This is such a major breakthrough. Please be sure to stay on top this developing news by visiting our website regularly, keeping your email address up-to-date and receiving our quarterly printed newsletter with your donation to NAAF.

Many Thanks,

Vicki Kalabokes, President & CEO

Damn it would be great if there would be a cure for it!

Interesting...Dad's side had the diabetes and arthritis. Since I look more like that side than my siblings do, I guess I got the pack of genes from that side...

I got the same letter last night. Yes, it would be great especially for "our" alopecia children to maybe not have to have shots, but gene therapy isn't always safe, either. It may be awhile before something safe could be approved. We can dream, can't we?!!!
