Hey everybody,

I'm watching True Life 'I'm losing my hair' at the moment, and I've been thinking about it some time now, and I have a question.

How many people know you have alopecia and/or have a wig?
I'm seventeen years old now and I have a wig, quite some friends know that I have a wig and have alopecia. I haven't gone to school, or the town where most of my friends live and a lot of people who know me live, bald. And I don't really know if I should tell people that I have alopecia. I'm not ashamed that I have alopecia but i'm still not fully certain if I should tell people. I am thinking about uploading pictures of me, bald, to Facebook and Twitter and Hyves (dutch sort of facebook) so people know I have alopecia and actually am bald.

And some good news! There's this television show here which is called 'Je zal het maar hebben' translated it means 'You'd have it' or something like that. It's about teenagers who have stupid diseases or sicknesses. I was watching it a couple of months ago and I decided to email that show and tell them about alopecia and maybe put that in a episode. So I got this mail back and they told me that they found it interesting and asked for my number for further information. So it could be that I'm going to be on that show. I think it would be awesome, it's a good way to let people know that bald young people don't always have to have cancer or something like that.
I'll let you guys know if I'm gonna be on that show, and where/if you could watch it online. Even though it's in dutch

Allright, see you guys later!

Hey thanks for your comment!
Well, i'm fine with it so I'll tell people sometime soon! And I don't mind if people ask something about it so that's all cool :)
Thanks!

Wow, are you brave! At your age, I can't imagine being on TV without a wig (I WAS on TV WITH one at your age, for a smarty-pants game show, on a local station. I was so shy, I think all I said out loud was my name. I only answered a question at rehearsal, off air.). However, I definately would have watched a show like yours, had there been one. Most teens do not know a single soul sharing this condition...so you will be a hero for those watching.

hey Lionel :) I am 19, I left my secondary school last year and i wore a wig for 5 of the 7 years I was there. Whilst I wore a wig I didn't tell anyone, not even my friends. But then I reached the point where I couldn't keep it up anymore, and I started going to 16th form bald. Now everyone can clearly see that I have no hair, and the few people who stop to ask, know that I have alopecia :)

Who you tell and don't tell is purely up to you. Just make sure that they are people that you trust and respect, and know will respect you :)

Take Care x

Yes, I've went to school today for the last time, bald. Not many people said anything except for one or two teachers, and some of my friends who already knew I'm bald so that was pretty cool.
I'm gonna walk around bald more often. With my hat on though,i like my hat, hehe.
