Do vitamins/supplements help or hurt?

Hi everyone... I have been taking a bunch of supplements since this hair loss and scalp pain started 6 months ago. I had more blood tests done last week and my Vitamin B12 was very high. This caused me to have hives, itchiness, redness, hot feeling, etc... I did more damage than good. My Vitamin D3 was low and my doc told me to take 4000 units a day to boost it back up. I know Vitamin D has a lot to do with your mood and depression but I also read today it can cause scalp pain and hair loss if you are low. I have felt slightly better the past few days since quitting my Complex B-Vitamin and increasing my D3. Does anyone know of any vitamins that have helped them with their hair health or scalp pain? I lost a lot of hair yesterday...or at least to me it seemed to be a lot!

If you think about it all this makes sense. If what we ingest causes harm and our lower intestine is damaged then a deficiency will happen. The damage that these foods cause is called leaky gut. Unless you heal the gut no matter how many vitamins you take they will never be absorbed by a body with an unhealthy stomach.

My 2 cents.

I so appreciate your comment susan... I will definitely consider that as an option. I have never had a food allergy and was thinking of going to an allergist and an endocrinologist. I have seen 4 dermatologists and am seeing yet another one on Sep. 7th. I don't even know what foods gluten is in? I had my labs done for the millionth time last week and I had too much Vitamin B12 and was low in Vitamin D3. I don't know if this even matters. I was told to increase my D3 by 4 times so I am taking 4000 units a day. As you may have read I have struggled with severe eating disorders for 18 years and my body has been hurt but have never had hair loss or scalp pain even at 57 pounds a few years ago. I literally woke up with the severe burning, itching, pulling feeling, etc... Did you have any of these symptoms? The doctors are clueless and if this next dermatologist can't find a diagnosis I may be going to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnestoa. I am sick of researching my own symptoms. I have spent about 4 hours a night for the last 6 months trying to figure this out because the doctors certainly haven't a clue. I am not losing in any one area, I lost ALOT in the temporal regions and all over shedding. Any idea from what you know what this could be? All other labs came back normal as did thyroid, CBC, immune diseases, etc... Hopefully getting hormones checked this week yet. Any advice would be appreciated!!! Lots of hugs...

Thank you again.. I have never been in recovery from the eating disorders... Been hospitalized 7 times throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. This hair issue has been making eating difficult once again and my weight fell back into the 80's recently. I am just so tired and have no ambition and I just want to give up on life at times. I just want a diagnosis so that I can at least know what I have and if it's treatable! Did you have scallp issues like burning, itching, sensitivity? Thanks!

I also wanted to add that some of us are too caught up with this idea that we need to remove food only if it shows up on a food allergy test. This is so wrong! We also think of food as junk food or healthy food. also wrong. Some foods that are seeming "good" for us do cause harm. Think of a diabectic and sugar, sugar is also in veggies and fruits, right! We need to listen to our bodies and find out what we need to put into our bodies to nourish it. Yes see an allergist but also get tested for food intolerences.

So, what if you have no allergies/intolerences to food...then what???
I say eat healthy, take a few vitamins & exercise. The fat soluble vitamins are A D E and K the rest are water soluble so you just excrete the excess out. (pee) hehe

If you have alopecia areata, then you have to be careful about supplementation because it can boost your immune system - and in AA, your immune system is already cranked up too high (it's attacking your body). I have to stay away from vitamins that have high amounts of zinc or beta carotene for this reason.

However, there are some vitamins that are crucial for hair growth - one is folic acid. It also helps eczema, a similar disorder that attacks the skin - not the hair.

I hope you are doing better by now (your post was over a year ago...). One thing you might want to check out is an enzyme complex called Wobenzym. It helped me during an outbreak of AA. I also used bovine colostrum and that helped, too. (it's purported to resensitize your thymus so that your T-cells can tell the difference between a foreign invader and your hair :)
