Final decision has been made...and need some help too

Sorry it has been a while since I logged on...it has been a rough decision making time.
Well I have decided that after my friend's wedding and reception(the first two weekends in January) that I am going to get a wig. My alopecia has been getting worse and I am done trying different medications to try and stop the inevitable. I don't want to keep trying different meds that are going to possibly hurt something else.
So I have decided that I am going to finally make the move to a wig. My aunt and my mom are going to go with me. My aunt has a hair piece that is glued on, but I don't believe I am going to go that route just yet. But she is going to take me to her hairstylist/salon.
It is a big decision, but I finally need to do something about it and do it for me.
I am kinda nervous about the reactions after I get the wig, but I am assuming it will only be temporary. Any advice on how I can make it a smooth transition?
Also, anyone have any suggestions about what to do with my current hair? I don't know if I should cut it very short or what. I just want to be as comfortable in the wig as I can and keep my head cooler since I tend to sweat.

I have worn wigs off and on since 1968. I like them...much better than what my own hair would be doing! Go try them on, get good coverage, have a stylist thin and trim bangs, and do NOT put synthetic wigs near heat. Use metal tong wigs combs without pulling: hold hair while gently working out from tips then down to net. Go see my page for ideas. Two or three tone wigs look more natural, as do wigs with bangs (which come too long on the box and will need professional trimming: do not trim yourself.). Try many on, take pix, try with glasses to see how ear tabs fit, and go in sun to see if color is too garrish. Think of where you will wear it, and what image you want. You may totally change your color and style, as I did! Have fun!

I think once you make your decision and get your wig - you will be amazed at how much weight is lifted from your shoulders Julie! I finally shaved - got a wig (or 10) - had the wig trimmed to my style - bought the tape - wore hats, etc. and now have the freedom wig ... and honestly - this hair is better than any hair I've had or NOT HAD in 20 years! Whatever you do - do it completely ... feel positive and KNOW that you will survive - you will be strong and you will be happier than you imagined! Promise! I'm not a pollyanna but this past year has shown me what my strengths are!

Rebecca, I am looking forward to that weight being lifted from my shoulders and to have a new self confidence. I have been trying to cover up my hair issues for over 10 years. I am done. I am looking forward to a full head of hair, even if it is a wig!
Thank you everyone for your advice! Keep it coming!

Wow, thank you Julie for asking for suggestions. You and everyone who has replied to you have helped me so much. I've been feeling the same way Julie. I think it will be fun to try on wigs and chosingthem. I am definitely going slow about this. No rushing into to buying until I've tried on many. I will write down info about my favourites and where they are located as I go. No more carrying around the burden of attempting to hide my bald spots and worrying about what others will think. Happy shopping Julie.

A Big Thank You To You All!!

Marie,
I have been fighting for many years to get over the wanting to hide my bald/thinning spots and not to worry about what other people think. But then you have people stare and people look right at your spots or my friends son pointed it out(not that he understood what he was doing though, he is only 6). I am ready to take control of my hair and move on! I know that it will take time, but I am ready.
I have been going back and forth of whether I am going to do this over the last year or so, but I have made my final decision.

Once you get past the initial anxiety, it can actually be kinda fun. It took me many, many years, but I've finally developed view of "hair" as an accessory, and I buy wigs like I buy shoes -- and I change them just as often (sometimes several times a day). At my ballroom dance lesson and practice tonight, someone said, "wow, last week, you had short blonde hair, and this week, you have long red hair. Why do you change?" and I just answered, "because I can!" ;)
