Hi all,

I've never posted a blog on here before, but I've become increasingly desperate for contact with fellow alopecians (I so hate that word), so I'm going to try to get on here more often. (PS. You all are beautiful -- every last one of you! Just scanning the pictures gives me so much more confidence in myself.)

So my question is this: what do those of you with some, but not all, of your hair do when you go to the pool? We're taking our kids to the pool next week and I don't have enough hair to go without a covering, nor am I ready to totally shave it since I use what's left of it to anchor my wig. And I don't want to stress about not getting head wet (how lame would that be in a pool?!?). Not to mention how I would love to just feel free enough to go swimming underwater without worrying about my head. I have a couple Buffs. Do those work well/stay on in the water? Mind you, I won't be racing, just playing around with my kids. I've heard some folks use swim caps but that seems like it would be hot and uncomfortable in an outdoor pool in the summer.

Any suggestions or tips? Like I said, I'm not ready to shave my head yet, so I'm looking for other solutions.

THANKS!!!
Carrie.

Hey Carrie. As a former competitive swimmer and water polo player I was just wondering if you've looked into caps that are made of other materials? They do make nylon caps as opposed to lycra or rubber. Hope that helps.

You may not feel confident enough to do this but I have patches, I buzz the rest of my hair and I just go in the way I am and to be honest I've never had anything bad happen. If you look at it this way, swimming has to be a sport/activity for very open minded people. You may have patchy hair but someone else will have all their scars/stretchmarks on show which they are embarressed why. Larger people will be wearing much more skimpy gear than they may feel comfortable in but that's just the way it is in the swimming pool. Good luck with whatever you choose though.

I know what you mean. It sucks cause I always worry about getting mone wet and stretching out the cap. I have over the years just used older ones to swim in ( i never ever go under water though and miss it), but if you don't have an old one for that yet I would just out yours up in a bun or something and try your hardest not to get it wet, in the futue get a shorter one, or like some said a differnt kind of cap, I would love that but can't afford the other ones... booo. but wow would i love to swim under water again, I have only once since I lost my hair at 16 (8 years ago) it was awesome.. anyway good luck!

I am heading to Florida in 2 weeks with another couple and I have not told them about my "disease" - I am still in the fear of exposure mindset as I was diagnosed only on June 1 of this year. I wear a 3/4 wig that clips into my hair. My temples are thin and the crown has a big ole bald spot, the rest of the patches are covered by my longer hair. At the pool I am resigned to wearing a hat over my own hair and not going underwater - heaven forbid! There is no way I could cover the bald spots with wet strands of hair! Also I am awaiting my Derm Match concealer and hope that I can use that. But I don't have little children who will want me frolicking with them in the water.

If you will not be actually swimming, a baseball cap pinned with bobby pins will give you some security. Good luck! And bless you when you (and I) are brave enough to bare it all!

I had not been swimming for years, had purchases a cap but looked about 90 in it!! Plucked up courage to go swimming with the family whilst on holiday & no one batted an eye lid (was dreading some childish comments). Just do it ......you'll be ready before anyone else having to mess with their damp locks.
