Guess what Santa is bringing me for Christmas??????

As Christmas approaches it looks as thought Santa is bringing me another bout of Alopecia.

Having shaved all of my hair off last December to reveal a glorious map of the world on my head (40% of my hair had fallen out) I was a happy bald person. By August the patches had all disappeared and so I let me hair grow back. I still kept it short but I did have hair. A couple of weeks ago though I noticed a patch on the left side of my head just above the ear had developed and it’s getting bigger. Also the hair above my right ear is disappearing making my hair line above the ear higher than it was.

I just hope that Santa can also bring a couple of nice hats to keep me warm, a stock of blades for my razor, a good amount of shaving gel and some Aloe Vera to put onto my head after I have shaved it.

The bottom line is that I will shave it all off again for the New Year if the patch continues to get bigger.

Just as you get used to having no hair it comes back and then just as you get used to having it again it goes.

What a strange thing this alopecia is!!!!!!!!

Hi Ray, I'm so sorry to here it has returned. As it turns out, my son will be sharing the same "gift" from santa with you. He's quite sad as he had lsot 70% and then had total regrowth only to have the loss returning. Perhaps his hopes had gotten up, I know mine did even though I warned myself against it. The sad part is that he had all his loss on bottom part of his head so we were able grow that top long and cover a lot of it, but now the loss is the whole top of the head. What a sucky Christmas gift. Tonight was the first time in quite awhile that he told me it is REALLY hurting him (making him so sad). He has always tried to hide his sadness but tonight it really opened up. I only hope that my son can learn to "go with the flow" as you seem to be able to do. Does it really get any easier after awhile?

Hi Margie,

Many thanks for the comment on my “blog”. I am really sorry to hear about your son. It must be very difficult for a young person to handle having Alopecia as it is such a strange illness. Unfortunately there is not a lot anyone can do to solve the problem as Alopecia seems to come and go as it pleases.

I consider myself very lucky in that when my Alopecia gets to bad I can just shave my head. As a man it is acceptable and quite fashionable to have very short hair or a shaved head so I don’t find it too much of a problem. With youngsters and ladies it is much tougher. I think the only thing you can do is to try and get your son to focus on a modern day hero (sports star or musician perhaps) who has no hair that he can emphasise with. My children say that when I have no hair I look like a stern central midfielder (we are avid football fans). Perhaps your son can relate to a sports star that he knows who has no hair.

I do hope that your son is OK and that you all have a Very Merry Christmas!!!!!
