I have been bald since August 29, 2010. I shaved everything and stopped shaving in October, no new growth. My oldest son will be start Kindergarten in the fall, he has done really well with my hair loss and even talks to his friends about it. I have decided to get a wig for him though, so that he wont have to answer so many questions. I dont think it is fair for him. I have done fine going bald and mostly scarf and hat less most of the time but I do get the "how far into treatment are you" question at least once a weekend. I give them my general "I dont have cancer it is Alopecia answer". They say well you look great. LOL

My problem is, I have no clue where to start looking for a wig or even what questions to ask. HELP.

I have no idea why people spend thousands of dollars on wigs. I get synthetics, on a 10% alopecia discount, between $99 and $250 usually. I have two good wig shops to choose from near my town, and I can order colors I want...even 2- or 3-tone wigs. They let me try on many and go outside to see the color in pure sunlight, look into 3-way mirrors with a hand mirror to see the back, and I can try on with glasses to see if the ear tabs work for me. Hats and scarves, shampoo and revitalizing spray, turbans and jewelry are sold too...plus special combs and wig styrofoam heads, travel stands, etc. This way, if I don't like one, I am not out that much money. It gives me that beauty shop experience, and they have cookies and chocolates, too.

I am right there with you! My boys are in 2nd and grade K. They think nothing of the fact that I have went to hair to aerodynamic mommy! My boys have been questioned at school too, and I think that it is important to give them the complete facts so they may "pass it on". Some days you want to take out a billboard that states EXACTLY what is going on, and other days you want to tell people to mind their own damn business. This is a tricky situation sometimes, and I can say from having it AA for so long that is is tougher with kids.
Do what feels right. Your kids or child know that you are their loving mommy no matter what, good mommys' come with or without hair! When it comes to school politcs, be true to yourself, that will speak leaps and bounds to your children. As humans we are all different and cosmetic differences do not define who we are.

if you do decide to start wearing them... I think its fun to have several that are synthetic so you can change it up and don't get bored. I suggest you join wigsupport.com. You can look up names of wigs to see women's pictures of the wig on them or look up a topic and see what women have said before. Then I would say that you should go to a wig shop and try on tons of wigs. Have fun with it, bring a friend and take pictures! Then when you find one you like, find out the name & brand name of it then look for it online. I got ripped off from the wig shop where I bought my first wig. I understand they need to make money but I paid $250 for a wig I could have bought online for $100!! Of course, I didn't know that then which is why I am telling you now. Just tell the shop that you will be back when you decide then buy it online. I hope you find what works for you!

I am probably getting my first wig this week. I went to our local beauty shop which also deals in wigs. They had only one brand, Henry Margu, which looks good. I did a lot of research on line and since I live in southern Arizona, need a light weight one. I usually wear a hat to walk my dogs and a ball cap, or scarf when working out. I still have a lot of hair but the top is so thin. I also just got a couple of "buff" scarfs from Sahalie.com. Really cute with a little hair sticking out. There are about 10 (or more) different ways they can be worn.

I think synthetic is a good starter wig, but I can TOTALLY see why people spends thousands on wigs, because I am one of them! You wouldn't understand until you wore a vacuum wig. Synthetics don't compare at all.

Rose Marie, That is a good idea to approach the owner and explain to them or try to negotiate. I was wanting to give Julia a warning when she goes to any wig salon that they might be overpriced. I was really sad when I found out how much money I could have saved by buying the wig online and I didn't want her to go through that as well. I completely understand with what you are saying. Some people are willing to pay more for the wig to get the service at a wig salon and that is how they stay in business. But for someone like me, I have to try to save money where I can. If you don't find a wig you like in a wig salon, you won't buy anything but you are still getting their time and service. I think it just comes with the territory.

Anne Williams, I would suggest you look at the Jon Renau "O'Solite" collection. I have the "Blair". It is very light and great for the summer time.

Lee- I know that my sister feels the same way about her vacuum wigs and now she just got the 'gripper' from Peggy Knight - I'm always sooooo happy when she calls me and is thrilled with her new piece - she always tells me that it's money well spent! And I always tell her that she's worth it!!! :) Kate
