I recently traveled to my hometown for my nieces’ graduations. I had a blast! I was a bit nervous because this would be the first time most of my family (besides those who have seen my Facebook picture) would see my shaven head.

I walk through the door and my Dad doesn’t say a word. His wife, on the other hand, looks at me and says, “Sheila, we’ll go through my bag of wigs in the morning.” Nice to see you too, I thought. The next day she grills me about doctors, shots, and Rogaine. Then she asked me if I was planning to go to church with them on Sunday. I almost said, “don’t worry I won’t sit next to you” but I politely said yes. No, thanks, I don't want to try on any wigs. End of conversation. I have to admit I found myself getting a little self-conscious and had to resist wearing a hat in the house.

Well, Sunday comes around. I come out shower, walk in the bedroom, and what do I see on the bed? That bag of wigs!!!! All I could do is laugh. I text my sisters to tell them, then my brother-in-law calls, begs me to please put on one of the wigs, send them a picture. Lol! That was fun. What I wish I could have taken a picture of is my Dad’s wife’s face when I walked in church with my shiny bald head.

Love it! What a great story and thanks for posting it. I admire your courage to not be a people pleaser, I don't know how I would have handled that situation but one thing I do know..my self esteem would have been rock bottom had she done that to me.

You go Girl, my motto (Do You and Keep It Movin') Love it! So proud of you for standing your ground. Since I have over come my fear of going to work bald, nothing or no one can stop me. This is who God made and love it or move on.

I love your story. I live vicariously through these stories of courage, because I am quite the wussy-girl when it comes to "baring my head." If it had been me, I know members of my family would have given me a "physical beat down." They've threatened to do that just because I wear wigs....and they are all bigger and meaner than me....
