I had a new "cancer" comment today while at a drug store. The checker was an older guy, and as he finished ringing up my stuff he smiled warmly and said "I'm a survivor". As usual, I had forgotten about being bald, and was taken aback. So, I responded with my usual "Oh, I don't have cancer...I have Alopecia Areata....But, I'm glad you're a survivor."'

As I left the store, it hit me - I'M A SURVIVOR, TOO! The next time someone tells me they're a survivor, I'm going to say:

"I'm a survivor, too. I've survived 3 years (or whatever it is) of living openly as a bald woman since I lost all my hair."

Aw, shucks....that's really nice, but please don't start the petition just yet. ( ;-) This may be TMI, but the most compelling reason I couldn't do it is I have serious sleep apnea and I don't think I could travel with my CPAP machine to all those locations. Very frustrating, cause I'd love to.

Did you see the photo I just posted of me at a dance last night? I mostly led the dancing, but got to drum a couple with the band.

Oh I don't know Mary, I just started at 56! Learned SCUBA, bike 20+ miles, run (on a treadmill) 2 miles at a session and lift weights. I think us "older" gals would kick ass in a survivor situation. We have the wisdom of our years!

Awesome post Mary. Sometimes I think we can really take for granted the strides and progress we have made. Yes, we are ALL survivors.

Thanks, everyone. More ruminations:

I HAVE SURVIVED:

The anxiety and pain of watching my hair depart.

Losing my favorite feature - my eyebrows.

Stares from strangers and countless cancer questions.

Kids that shout "Mommy, she doesn't have any hair!"

Tears of anger, fear and self-loathing.

Sweat and overheating under a wig in hot weather.

TO BECOME:

Happy with myself as I am.

Grateful for all that I have.

Blessed with so many wonderful friends I never would've known.

Excited about what's to come.

One smooth, confident, and COOL lady!

AREN'T WE LUCKY THAT THIS DISEASE HAS MADE US SO STRONG?

Thanks, Carolina.

It still happens to me sometimes...less and less. A week or so ago, I accidentally hit my head very hard on an open cupboard door, and I cussed and screamed and then cried for a long while. (Fortunately, I was alone in the house!) I realized that the tears were probably suppressed emotion about my hair loss. I was crying because I would have a mark on my nice smooth head, but really crying because I'm bald. Once I realized that, I stopped crying. It's okay to be upset sometimes.

Alopecia Universalis, Alopecia Survivor.
Mary, girl you rock, I bet you could still carry off a 2 piece suite. You look fabulous girlfriend.
Hey, I'm 56, when in Maui last year wore my 2 piece, hat to protect my head but when I went to cool off in the pool, off the hat went & I walk to the pool. Ah that water felt great.
I got some looks & was asked the yee old cancer question, I educated many a people.
Here's to Survivors's :) CHEERS!

Thanks, sweetie! It's all about educating people, one at a time (or more, if you can go out in front of a huge crowd!)
