My driver's license is up for renewal, and I've been waiting until I could get a new photo that looks the way I've looked for 3 years - bald! Every time I had to show the old photo ID to someone, it depressed me to see myself with all the hair and my original eyebrows. And, people would look at the photo and just assume all the more that I have cancer.

So, this week I made an appointment and went in to have a new photo taken. They unexpectedly made me take the written test again, but fortunately, I passed.

My new license will not only have a photo of me in all my bald glory, but it says "bald" under hair color. What else could it say?!

Another milestone on my path to self-acceptance achieved! Have any other of you had a driver's license photo taken?

Hi Mary, yes, I have had all my id changed to my current look. I remember when I renewed my passport, I use to wear a wig and I always felt funny when I crossed the border without one. Eventually I knew it was time to change when I really came to the conclusion that I was no longer wearing wigs and probably wouldn't be on a regular basis. I feel that the way you face the world everyday is the way that your id should portray you too. Good on you! I tick the bald box too ;). If that is not available I tick black. Since I am currently areata, my roots show ;)

You rock Mary! I've actually been thinking about what I'm going to do when I have to get my license renewed. I usually wear a scarf or hat while going out....but if they won't let me wear one I'm not sure what I will do. I still have some time to decide so who knows were I will be at that time in my life.

Great story! I love the "bald" under the "colour" section. lol. My driver's license has a picture of me in head scarf but that's as far as I've gone (so far). Glad you're feeling good, Mary! Your posts are so positive!!!! THANKYOU!

Isn't it a great story. It is because of Mary, whom I call my mentor, that I had my passport photo taken ah natural. It is who I am now, a bald lady. Interesting though when we presented the information to the representative at City Hall, she had to document why the difference in photos? My drivers license was updated 2 years ago, the photo for a license was pretty good, lol. Mary said it well, when I look at it, it hurts; anyway, I had to explain why in one photo I had hair & the other I was bald as a bean. I explained AA.
I will let you know how it all turns out.
Mary has me thinking, perhaps I should call DMV & get a new photo taken, it has to be easier then what I have been saying when asked to show my ID, just picture me with or without hair, it's lil ol me.

Thanks for sharing this experience, Mary. It had me reaching for my wallet to check my license. And then David piped up so I reached for my passport. **giggle** In both pics, I still have locs down to my rear. **sigh**

But now, thinking about it after reading your experience, it would seem strange to leave them as is.
