Out of the mouths of babes- conversations with kids about alopecia :-)

I have had some great conversations with kids in the past 24 hours about my alopecia and wanted to share.

Last night I met 3 adorable kids, and this was my conversation with them:

Adorable little boy#1:" I thought youd have long hair" (he had been told about me and that I was going to babysit him and his siblings during a kirtan)

Me: "Nope, I dont have any hair"

ALB#1: "You have some."

Me: "Yes, I do"

ALB#1: "Why dont you have any hair?"

Me: " Something in my body said I dont want to have hair anymore and it went away."

Adorable little girl: " Did it fall out or just sink back in your head?" (LOVE that!)

Me: "It fell out"

ALB#2: "Why did it fall out?"

Me: "Something in my body made it fall out"

ALG: "What color was your hair when you had it?"

Me: "About the color of yours (brown) but a little lighter."

ALB#1: "Do you want to have hair again?"

Me: "Yes, I would like to have hair again."

ALB#1: "You will grow hair again!!" (said very enthusiastically as only a 5 yr old boy can!)

Me: "I will? Awesome!"

And then it was on to the next thing...lol. They were so cute!

Then today I was standing at the checkout and a little boy was looking at me. He said "What happened to your hair." His dad said "Hey, try to be nice!" I said as I walked over to him" No, no, Im glad he asked, I like it when people ask. Something in my body said it didnt want to have hair anymore so it fell out" The little boy thought a moment and said "Well, you can get some more hair" I smiled and replied "Yes, I can. I have a wig but dont like to wear it because its hot and itchy" The little boy said "Oh, okay." I told him what made my hair fall out was alopecia. He said "alopecia" and looked thoughtful. I thanked him for asking and wished he and his dad a good day.

Gotta love kids :-)

Great story! Thank you for sharing. I have a 5 year old cousin, and not long ago out of the blue while we were having lunch she said "I love that wig". Kids can say the funniest things.

Kids are refreshing in their honesty. In my daughter's kindergarten class they ask me if I wear scarves because I'm afraid people will laugh at me for being bald. I say honestly, yes. Then they ask to see my head, I show them, and we smile together. My kids (6 and 2) both love to touch my head. A few days ago I almost cried when I took my scarf off at home and mu daughter said "Oh Mommy, you're so beautiful and cute." She used to say I couldn't be pretty if I didn't have hair like girls. I'm glad she's redesigning her paradigm.
